Question

Downgrade from FrameMaker 11 to FrameMaker 10

We've purchased a bunch of FrameMaker 11 licences. These are the full versions of FrameMaker, not part of an upgrade.

We are having many problems getting our FDK plugins and other scripts to run in FrameMaker 11.

Can we downgrade to FrameMaker 10? If so, how do we do this?

Thanks.

Umm, nope – this is just a user-to-user forum here Gloreen. If you had got FM10 in the past, you could use the Adobe Licensing site to download and install a copy of that version, but if all you’ve purchased is FM11, then that won’t work.

BTW, why would you want to go backwards in FM versions anyway?

if you've bought shrink licenses (boxes) instead of TLP license, there's no chance to get a downgrade.

If you bought your licenses with the TLP license model, you can contact adobe and get a downgrade.

But are you sure your plugins run with FM 10? If you come from FM 7 and your plugins don't run with FM 11, I could imagine they won't run with FM10 too.

If you REALLY want to go back, you can. Just uninstall FM11 and install FM10 again. Before you do this however you should save any files you've opened in FM11 in a Document 10 format. If you don't you won't be able to open them in FM10.

Do you want to tell everyone what problems you are having with plugins and scripts? You never know, someone may have a solution.

Unfortunately we don’t have FrameMaker 10. We’ve been using 7.x for years, but since we’re moving to Win 7 we decided it was time to upgrade (and the xml features of FrameMaker 11 looked fantastic). So we’ve bought the full retail versions of FrameMaker 11.

The problems with the FDK plugins and with scripts are due to some FrameMaker 11 bugs: the FDK (and ExtendScript) can no longer determine the difference between a file opened in the background (by Framemaker checking xrefs for example) and a file opened directly by a user; the display property can no longer be reliably toggled (once disabled, it cannot always be re-enabled). These are major problems which prevent a lot of our automated processes from working. I’m testing on both XP and Win 7. We get the same problems on both operating systems.

Hopefully there will soon be a patch that will fix these problems, but in the meantime, we need to see if we can install an earlier version of FrameMaker. Otherwise we have a pile of unusable software.

If you purchased through the volume licensing program you may be able to get older versions; if you just went through a reseller, you're probably out of luck.
