Edit done with Track Text Edit lost

I've spent the last week making revisions to my 50k+ manuscript (Book) in Framemaker, using the Track Text Edits function turned on, saving each document within the manuscript before closing it. When I opened the manuscript  (Book) today, all of my changes are gone and Tract Text Edits is turned off. Where I inserted text, it now shows as blank lines in the document.

Any way to recover the changes, or have I just lost a weeks' worth of revisions?

If you're storing your work as XML files, then things might get lost if not addressed in the structappp and converted to attributes in the XML.

But I believe you're using your own custom structure, and imagine you're saving as .fm, correct?

    Hi Matt,

I don't use XML, just structured FrameMaker, saving as .fm files.

    Hi Quintin,

Strange. I use Track Text Edits all the time, but I had not experienced your issue yet.

    What I would do:

Make a backup copy of all FrameMaker files of this project!

    Restart Windows, restart FrameMaker.

Check, if all conditions are shown. If yes, hide some and then show all again.

Check, if Track Text Edits are shown or hidden. Change this and then back again.

Save as MIF and search the MIF file for text which should be there. You can use MIFBrowse to do this. Easier and safer than e.g. Notepad++. Does this give you any hints?

    Best regards, Winfried

    Hi Winfried,

    I tried your suggestions:

    • Opened FM
    • Opened the FM Book
    • Enabled Track Text Edits
    • Opened a document from the Book.
    • Made changes - changes are tracked as expected.
    • Saved and closed document.
    • Re-opened document - changes are still present and shown as tracked.
    • Saved document as MIF file.
    • Checked MIF file using MIFBrowse - none of the changes were present, only the original text
    • Closed FM
    • Opened FM and checked the document - changes are still present and shown as tracked.
    • Closed FM and restarted PC.
    • Opened FM, FM Book and Document
    • Changes are still present and shown as tracked.
    • Accepted all changes.
    • Saved and Closed Document and FM
    • Opened FM, FM Book and document - changes were retained.

For some bizarre reason, my changes were kept this time round. Not sure why they weren't kept before. Alas, it means I will need to redo the revisions (sadly some revisions aren't in my notes).
