Extracting embedded graphics

I've inherited a bunch of FrameMaker files where all the graphics were embedded in the document rather than imported by reference. When I right click on a graphic and select Object Properties, of course it says, "Referenced File: No File."

Is there any way I can do some sort of global redirect to have them all go to a graphics folder to reference the graphic rather than embedding them? Or am I just hosed?

Since I don't know the file names, I'd have to hunt through the gazillion graphics folders until I found the right graphics to re-import (by reference, of course) -- in a 300 page document! GAH!

Here's what I've tried: running a List Of...References, a List of Figures, Bruce Foster's Archive, swearing at the previous people who did this (and who aren't here anymore) -- all to no avail!

Any help and/or advice (other than "turn around and run as fast as you can...") would be greatly appreciated.

My predecessor also had the habit of embedding vector drawings (circuit diagrams) in Frame; I have been able to extract them by printing the relevant page as a PDF and then opening it with CorelDraw, which is part of our standard toolkit.Then I export them from CorelDraw as EPS and all works fine.

I've had some success copying and pasting embedded vectors from FrameMaker into Illustrator without going the PDF route.

Another approach for rasters is to zoom in and use SnagIT or Jing to do a screen capture (www.techsmith.com).

Hello,

If you happen to have FrameScript, I wrote a script for this purpose that enables you to interactively extract embedded graphics and rename them. The script automatically extracts each graphic to a designated folder and reimports the graphic, preserving the resolution and position of the original.

Feel free to contact me off list if you'd like to give it a try. I wrote the script because I found myself in similar circumstances a couple of years ago.

It is possible to extract embedded graphics with control over the facet type and output format from a structured FrameMaker application.

When starting from a non-structured application there is some work to do setting up the structure application and its read/write rules. Depending on the size of the problem it can be an economical way to get back to the original graphic types.

The default graphic format for this method is CGM, but other formats can be chosen.

You are correct regarding image quality directly from FM.

That's the reason PDF could be a better solution.

What happens if you save the FrameMaker files as HTML? Does FrameMaker extract the images and save them somewhere?

However, I suspect that even if that gets the image files out of FrameMaker that the image quality may suffer a bit from the journey...

One suggestion:

Create a PDF file (or a number of ...)
Make sure no compression is used in the JobSetting in Distiller

From the PDF file save all graphics by exporting the PDF file to
HTML: This will also create images for each of the PDF embedded images.

Then the tedious work of reinserting them correct into FM

You could also go the Word way. From PDF export to Word, and then from Word save as HTML. This also create images.
