Failed PDF Creation due to Offending pdfmark

I have a large book from which I need to create a PDF. I can create PDFs of individual files; however, when I go to distill the .ps file, creation fails with the following error message in the log file:

%%[Page: 672]%%
%%[ Error: ioerror; OffendingCommand: pdfmark ]%%

Other information:

The .book file generates without error.

In PDF setup, I selected the Generate Tagged PDF option.

Patch installation is up to date.

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?

    Correct answer

I'll try responding via email as the forum will no longer let me respond to

    the original posting.

If I remove the index from the book, I still get the same failed

    distillation issue.

My index is already an IOM, so I've covered this base, too.

I do not use IXGen, and considering that we're a startup, no money to go and

    buy.

My IOM is 13 pages of two-column, single-space entries, probably 90-100

entries per page, so roughly 1,300 index entries.

All files were created using v8.0 of Frame.

Conditional text is used, although not extensively. I've tried going back,

showing all, and showing condition indicator. I still get the error.

I've found one reference online to an ioerror + pdfmark error that was related to the Document Structuring Conventions, so disabling DSC  might be worth a try; in years gone by DSC settings were a source of considerable distillation pain.

I believe you said you have an Acrobat install and not just the one that comes with FM (??), I'm using Acrobat 9 so I don't know if the menu items will be the same in your Distiller or not, but open Distiller, go to Settings and then click on "Edit Adobe PDF settings.

Question: What joboptions settings are you using -- High Quality Print or .... ??

Then click on Settings and find the entry similar to "Edit Adobe PDF settings" which should bring up a dialog similar to this one below:

Click on Advanced, and then check whether DSC is enabled

assuming so, uncheck it. Then do OK, and when the Save dialog comes up save it as a new name (NoDSC.joboptions or whatever).

Now try to create the .ps and pdf, being sure that the NoDSC joboptions are being used when you distill.

    Welcome to the forum, RnP,

What specific version of FM, including the "pxxx" numbers as shown on Help > About.

What specific Distiller, is it the one that comes with FM or from a separate Acrobat Pro? if separate, what version of Acrobat?

Is there a graphic or image just before or on page 672? If you remove the graphic does the file distill correctly?

I am using Framemaker 8.0p277 and Acrobat 3D 8.1.4. I believe that Acrobat was purchased as part of the Technical Communication Suite (that was before my time here).

PDF creation fails as it attempts to distill the index portion of the book. However, I can create a PDF of the index just fine, resulting in a clean, usable PDF, but I cannot create a .ps file and then distill the .ps file to a PDF of the book file, excluding the index.

I can (and if I'm unable to unearth an answer by the weekend) and will try to create separate PDFs of the individual chapters of this book, hoping that will narrow down exactly where this offending PDFmark is. I'd like to avoid that for obvious reasons.

Thanks for your help, Sheila--much appreciated.

I should also mention that despite the photoshop notation in the error message, I'm not using Photoshop on any of the images or files in this document. Some of the icon files were manipulated in Photoshop, but there were saved as various image files.

I have a sneaking suspicion that there is a funky conditional text tag somewhere that is wreaking havoc. However, I mostly wish for a more descriptive error message.
