Finding FrameMaker Overrides

If you don't want to install a plug-in, you can use the File > Utilities > Create and Apply Formats command. This command creates new formats for each variation of existing paragraph and character formats, and for each untagged character override. Variations of existing formats use the original tag with a numeric suffix. New character formats are called CharFmt with a numeric suffix. For example, suppose you have a paragraph format called Body. Some Body paragraphs have an override forcing them to the start of the next page. Then the command creates a new format called Body1 that is identical to Body except that it sets the Start property to Top of Page. It applies this new format to all the paragraphs with the override.

Similarly, suppose you have a character format called Emphasis that sets the angle to Italic, but no formats that set the weight to bold. If you apply italic as an override to some characters, bold as an override to others, and both italic and bold to yet a third group, FrameMaker will tag the first set as Emphasis, using the existing format. It will tag one of the other two as CharFmt and the other as CharFmt1 (depending on which occurs first in the document).

To find the overrides, you can use this command and then search for occurrences of the new formats. Of course, you may wish to change the formats and do the searching in a copy of the original document.
