Finding 'invisible' fonts

It's likely that Acrobat either isn't configured to see the same installed fonts that FM does, or FM is set up to use printer fonts that aren't actually installed on the computer but are present on a physical printer.

To check #1, go into Distiller and make sure that all font directories are specified. For instance, there are some fonts in a directory under \fminit that may not be installed as system fonts but because they're in FM's path, it can see 'em.

To fix #2, just make sure that the Adobe PDF logical printer is set as the system default printer. (There's a plugin running around somewhere that lets you set this just for FM if you want.)

Oh look, I solved it myself. Here's how:

- I turned off "remember missing font names."

- I PDFed the book.

- I saved the book and all files.

Bingo, "Times" was flushed. The difference is that I had to PDF the files to force it to forget the missing fonts, whereas normally you only have to open the file. Weird.

Hi. I have a small Framemaker 8 book that consists of a cover, TOC, and two chapters. Opening the files produce no missing font errors (I have "remember missing font names" checked). But when I PDF the file, the FM console warns that "Times" was replaced by "Times New Roman." (Neither font is explicitly used in the template.)

I can't flush this problem by un-remembering the font names because it only finds the missing fonts when PDFing occurs. I've never seen this before. Any ideas?

Those are just the codepage specific encodings for the Arial font. In FM 8 you have to use the complete Arial and the appropriate input method to get the correct unicode values represented in the codepage specific versions.

Frame 7.2 lists Arial CYR, BALTIC, CE, TUR & the same for Times New Roman. where have the fonts gone in frame 8 and 9.
Do I have to pay for the minor improvements in these releases twice, by buying all my fonts again? From Adobe no less...

I did the 'remember missing font names' thing and got rid of it, but it just bugs me to have these remnants lying around in the document.

I tried a different approach - created a list of references to fonts for the offending files and managed to find where the fonts were being used that way - of course they are now Times New Roman, which is not used in the document at all. I then Ctrl+Alt clicked on the instances of Times New Roman to go to the relevant section of the doc.

The most common place they were found was in the preceding paragraph to a 'Note' style table and in the table itself. However on inspecting the paragraph and character designer I couldn't find anything amiss.

I should probably just let this slide.

FWIW, fonts can hide in a number of places. I'm assuming that you've
already checked the Master and Reference pages using Art's suggestion.

One sly culprit is a table definition stored in the Tables Catalog.
For every cell in the header and first row, the font information is
also stored.

Another less obvious culprit is an empty graphic text string. If
you've selected the graphic text tool, click anywhere on the page and
change your mind, there still is a null entry that has formatting
information. You need to do a Select All on a page to see if there are
any mysterious selected boxes that need to be blown away.

To really make sure that you find the missing fonts listed in the
console, you need to search in a MIF version of the file.

Otherwise, changing the Preference settings for remembering missing
font names and going through a save and open cycle will wash these out
of the file. Just remember to reset the preference back the way it
was.

If you want to fix it, go into Preferences and turn off Remember Missing Font Names. Open the file and save.

If you want to find it, yes, you can search for a font -- do a Find for character format and specify the font. Remember that it may be on a Master or Reference page. You can also save the file as a MIF and search for the font name with an ASCII editor.
