FM 7.2 Vista and Patch 158

I got tired of FrameMaker 7.2 hanging all the time, so I attempted to install AdobeFrameMaker7_2p158Patcher.exe

Unfortunately, it died complaining that there was insufficient disk space. That is a bit surprising, given that I have over 400Gig available.

Suggestions?

Bob

    Well, I have an XP partition on my Mac, so I moved my work there.  The installation went smoothly and the 158 patch worked without any problems.  I've currently only have a single, small project that needs something like FrameMaker, so I really don't want to invest money in an upgrade that I probably wouldn't use for a long time.

    Bottomline to take away from this discussion: FM 7.2 is simply not usable on Vista.  You need a $400 upgrade to make it work, which is better than $1000 for the basic package.  These prices are amazing!

    Bob,

    The most obvious suggestion is FrameMaker 9 or Windows XP. I don't think Adobe claims Vista compatibility for Frame 7.x. Frame 8 I really like. Frame 9 is a learning experience ;-) I haven't learned to like it yet, but it is the future. I do understand sticking with Frame 7.2...after all I'm still running Frame 7 on my Mac, but time does march on. When you upgrade the OS, some application upgrades are inevitable.

    The written patch requirements are very clear;

    This update requires that the English, French, German, or Japanese version of FrameMaker 7.2b144 is installed on your system.

    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3332

    and system requirements linked from that page are also clear;

    Microsoft® Windows® 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista™ (trial version not supported on Windows® 2000)

    Why should I have expected the patch to fail on installation?

    I have version 7.2b144 installed.

    I have Windows Vista.

    Therefore, I meet the "written" requirements.

    That said, I suspect you are correct.  However, my budget doesn't allow me to spend $400 to upgrade to something with a bunch of features that I really don't need.  If I can't get it running on Vista, I'll just have to go back to using it on my Macintosh laptop.

    "Hi! I'm a PC and I can't run Windows applications... because the manufactures don't support them without you spending big bucks!"

    Considering the fact that I purchased my license over a decade ago, and have upgraded at $400 a pop multiple times, I really don't see another upgrade as an option.  As much as I like FrameMaker, I am no longer in the newsletter production business, so the need doesn't justify the cost.

    I understand your frustration. I've been using FrameMaker on and off since version 2 on the Mac (I think). Anyway, I've been fortunate that my employers have always paid for the tool and upgrades, though I remember upgrades only costing about $200. 7.2 has to be going on 5 years old--it was developed two OSes ago! And that's the catch, folks just get the new OS--often it's a corporate decision or comes with a new computer, in any event, not always a choice involved--but are reluctant to upgrade working functional software to match. Now, I remember when software was cheap and hardware was the expensive bit ... those were the days.

    Cheers,
