FM 7.2p158-Character spacing goes crazy

FrameMaker 7.2p158 on Windows XP SP2. Yesterday, Oct 15, 2008, right after a load of Microsoft Windows updates, I started experiencing a strange problem while typing.

No matter what file I opened, even a brand new template file, as I started typing, the character spacing would go crazy. I even saw an "s" superimposed over another "s"!! Sometimes the characters will continue off the margin and then start again on a new line but indented and some of the text is not visible. If I select the text and apply the "Default Font" character tag, all is well. But as soon as I start typing again, crazy reappears.

I've tried applying the hotfix that was recently provided for the missing characters when generating PDF problem, but that didn't help. I cannot move to FM 8.0 yet so that's not an option.

HP 8100 on the network. Its simple: when it starts doing it almost immediately with the MS 4000 keyboard (even after rebooting and installing a newer driver) but does not do it at all with either a KeyTronic keyboard or a Logitech Wave keyboard, I think Ive narrowed it down. There was always something funny about that board anyway, with the "m" key a little problematic-frequently didn't strike and so I could find myself having to really jab it.

I'm not too keen on this Logitech board but it was either that or another MS 4000 as I wasn't sure that would work. But maybe it was that particular board and so I think tomorrow I'll return the Logitech and get a new MS 4000 and see how it goes.

How about your default printer, what's that set to?

I've shutdown, restarted, restarted from running, everything. I tried installing the newest version of Intellitype but that didn't help. So I now have a Logitech Wave Keyboard I'm going to try.

It's not just the display. It's spacing because selecting the whacked out text and clicking "Default Font" sets it right. It's some kind of bizarre spacing issue and I think it has to do with the keyboard-as strange as that sounds.

Have you cold-booted since this occurrence?

I've only occasionally seen the display go wonky but it's always been resolved after a boot, so I attributed it to something clobbering the graphics driver(s).

I use a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 v1.0, via USB and so I finally got the bright idea to swap in a different USB board. I tried a KeyTronic and I did not see the spacing behavior exhibited. So, I'll try reinstalling Intellitype and if that doesn't work, I'll try a new keyboard.
