FYI, the FM 8.0.2 (aka 8.0p273) patch is now available. You must use the Adobe Updater available through the Help > Updates... menu in FM, for now. See also http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2008/02/framemaker_802_available_now_1.html

The main issues addressed, from the readme file, are:

These are some of the areas in which we have fixed the issues in this patch. The issue description details the original problem that was fixed. Additional details may have been added if deemed necessary.

Shortcuts:
Operations to change the Paragraph and Character tag in document using Function keys F8,F9 "time out", at an apparently random interval. Also these operations become unusable for Paragraph and Character designer when respective designers are opened.

Hyphenation:
a) Incorrect hyphenation takes place in FrameMaker 8 when accented chars are present in first few chars of a word, and when hyphenation operation is performed more than once.
b) German Hyphenation gives wrong results if word contains non-ASCII characters

Indexing:
When char format is used in markers for multi-level entries containing SAME text then the generated index has some entries missing (all ASCII data)

Solaris Menu:
Solaris Japanese FrameMaker is not able to load menu items correctly in unstructured mode

Control Characters:
a) For various dialog, if special spaces (control characters) are edited, then they are lost and are replaced with question marks
b) Control characters(Emspace, HardHyphen etc) are not mapped to corresponding character in FrameMaker as a result user needs to change font in order to display these characters correctly. While displaying these characters, codepoint should be mapped to the one used by the FrameMaker and should be translated correctly on xml save/export.

RTF:
While importing an RTF file containing object which comes as marker in FrameMaker, marker location may be incorrect in certain cases.

PDF:
Hyperlinks does not work from one pdf to another if we open the pdfs through web

Unicode:
Conversion of certain Unicode characters of Symbol / Dingbats / WebDings fonts is incorrect when an XML is opened in FrameMaker

Miscellaneous.:
FrameMaker is not responding while selecting text by mouse on Vista if Mousekey is kept pressed for long time.

I am on Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 (just got it) and installed FM 8.0.2. I am having all sorts of problems too. I had it installed on Windows XP SP2 but just upgraded to Vista.

    1. I installed v8 with the PDF add-on. (Not sure what the PDF add-on did but there is no Adobe PDF printer device installed.)
    2. I patched with upgrade P266. Worked just fine (but I need 273!)
    3. Rebooted (just in case).
    4. I installed P273 (size - 18MB) and the prompts are in part French and all sorts of Asian languages. I clicked thru the defaults and didn't install. This is serious! I can't seem to get p273 installed. HELP!!! Any ideas???

    Art, Chris,

Thanks for the responses. I should have made it clear that I am running FM 8 on a physical computer and in a seperate virtual environment. The problem with the update occurs on the physical computer. I have not yet tried on the virtual machine, though I suspect that the result will be the same. I also tried the update on a physical computer running FM 7.1 and the dialogs were still garbled, though I was able to discern the "requires FM 8.0 p266" dialog, and bail at that point.

BTW there should be no difference between a virtual and a physical computer as far as FM is concerned. The virtual is set up exactly the same as the physical computer with Windows XP, Office, and various Adobe products.

    regards

    Jon,
Are you running FM in the virtual environment? I think that unless everything (all fonts, installation record, shared Adobe files, etc.) are inside, the installer may have a problem. I don't think that stuff can just be on the system somewhere; I think it needs to be accessible.

    Chris,

    Thanks for the response.

Unfortunately the proxy setup here prevents the integrated updater from working. I also have a virtual environmentt, which is not connected to the production network, so I need the standalone updater.

    Jon,

In that case I suspect that there's something about the setup of this
virtual environment that the updater doesn't like. Letters replaced
with vertical bars are usually a symptom of a missing system font, or
a font that is missing required characters.

I'm afraid there's nothing to do but contact Adobe support directly
(they don't read this forum). Sorry!

    Chris

    Folks,

Has anyone tried installing 8.0.2? When I try to run the exe the install/update dialogs have lots of question marks and the text on the buttons are vertical bars. When I try on another pc, some of the text appears to be French!

I am wondering if my region (English Australia) is being detected properly?

    regards

Yes, I've successfully installed 8.0.2 on an International English
version of FM. But I used the integrated updater, not the standalone
executable. Did you try that one as well?

    Hi Vivek,

Yes I am using FM8 with the patch 8.0.2 applied. Without the patch I got the same result. It looks like only the German version is updated.

    Paul

Are you using the FM8 applied with patch 8.0.2?
    February 10, 2008
Paul, would you post a new thread on the forum so that the issue is more widely seen by users and [hopefully] by anybody from Adobe who happens to view the forums -- in this thread it might easily be overlooked.

"German Hyphenation gives wrong results if word contains non-ASCII characters."

This also occurs with Dutch new language. For instance with the word "ongeëvenaard". When this word is hyphenated the last text on the first line is "onge-"; on the next line al the chars are missing and the line is empty. I expected the line "evenaard"
