Question

FM 8 and FM 9 - impossible to create large sized PDFs

This is on Windows Vista, FM 9 and FM 8:

1) Save as PDF does not work when the paper size is 1188 mm x 840 mm (A0 format).

A blank pdf is created or a pdf with a size of 1 mm x 1 mm.

Same with A1 format 594 mm x 841 mm.

A2 format (420 mm x 594 mm) works.

Has anyone seen this before?

2) When I create a blank document, type some text and save as pdf, FM tells me to turn off the pdf option to only embed system fonts because of a missing Times font - a font I did not use in this document.

Are these bugs and if yes, where can I file them?

I have installed the microsoft hotfix that was mentioned in this forum. Same result.

    Thanks for all your suggestions.

All the following applies to FM9. This is the version my customer will use, since you cannot buy any other version anymore.

I found out the following: I can produce A0 pdfs in FM9 only when I uncheck the new option "convert cmyk to rgb". A side effect of this is that colors defined as percentage of a process color do not work anymore: 20 % black comes out as solid black in the pdf file, solid black comes out as white. If you redefine the colors as process colors themselves, it works correctly.

The "print into file" mechanism seems to still change cmyk colors to rgb (with no option available to change the behaviour), and therefore the creation of an A0 pdf does not work when I print into the Adobe PDF printer.

    As to your suggestions:
    - microsoft hotfix did not solve the issue
    - reducing the resolution so that longest paper size * ppi < 32000 is no option because the longest paper size is 1188 mm. This gives a maximum resolution of 26 ppi. Pretty low.

Does anyone know if I can control the save as pdf settings dialogue with a preference or ini file? I want to turn off "convert cmyk to rgb" as a default setting, and I want to turn off "create bookmarks" and "create tagged pdf"?

    Thanks.

    Yours,

Also, verify that you have the latest 8.0p277 update version for FM8, as there were some issues with "A0" page sizes listed in the ReadMe file for ver 8p266.

    Updates here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=22&platform=Windows

Note that FM updates aren't "roll-up" so each one needs to be applied individually, preferably with a reboot between each update.

You also should apply Microsoft's hotfix for PDF problems from the
GDI. See this TCS blog for details:

    Hi,

If the resolution is too high, blank small pages may be created.
    See here:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=329043
Oversize PDF files may contain blank pages or very small pages (FrameMaker 7.x on Windows)

    Best regards

Do you get the same result when you Print to the Adobe logical printer, the preferred way of creating a PDF?

Also, it sounds as if the Adobe PDF printer is NOT set as the system default printer... Using the Adobe printer instance is the recommended setting.

And finally, are you running with the full version of Acrobat, or just the limited distill-only version that ships with Frame. If it is the full install, what version is it?
