FM 9 and Variables -

Using FrameMaker v.9.0p237, installing updates as they pop up (do I have the latest?). Running on Windows XP Professional Version 2002, Service Pack 3. I want to remove variables that we no longer need. When I select the variable name and click the Trash can icon, the first variable is deleted.

When I select subsequent variables, the selection moves several places down the list and the variable selected for deletion is still there. Frame

was crashing inmediately when I tried to delete variables before I installed the last update (using Adobe Updater). However, if I continue, Frame

eventually crashes. The crash message ( "FrameMaker has detected a serious error and must quit") shows the numbers 9004, 6920492, 9676798.

In addition, when I try to edit a variable, the Add/Edit Variable dialog shows empty fields for the

Name and Definition. I can re-enter the variable name and definition and click Edit and have it

save the change, but I shouldn't have to do this. This behavior is intermittent - there are times I can

edit variables as expected, especially after a crash.....

Any help would be greatly appreciated. .

    The latest version is FM9.0p255, a.k.a 9.0.4

I would recommend that you install all of the patches in order and then try again.

You can get the patches here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=22&platform=Windows

When you try to edit variables and get the empty fields in the dialog, have you scrolled down the end of the variable list to get to the user-created variables and highlighted the variable to be edited?  Are you on a master page or body page?

Definitely reboot after doing updates; I always reboot between multiple updates, too.

I am on a body page when I try to edit variables and I scroll down until I find the name of the variable to edit, select it, and click the Edit icon. The Add/Edit Variable dialog shows up, with nothing in the fields. I don't get to the end of the list.

Can you detect any pattern to the problem, e.g.

    1. are the variable names somehow unusual (are they regular alpha numeric characters, do they use any "suspect" characters, spaces, etc)? A good way to check for the naming integrity would be to look at the variables by saving the file as MIF and then examining the variable catalog through Graham Wideman's must-have freebie  MIFbrowser, at MIFBrowser
    2. were the files / variables created in an older FM version? Were they imported from other FM files?
    3. does this happen after a reboot or only after some period of time? could it be a result of some conflict with other apps that you've opened in the same session.

    Other suggestions:

    1. have you checked for an updated graphics driver; FM is chronically hyper-sensitive to graphics drivers.

Another possibility is to notice which pods you have open and possibly docked together -- somebody on the Framers list just recently indicated that having multiple pods combined into one strip seemed to be a culprit in crashes, so I wonder whether you're running into a related pod-black-hole.

Update 9.0.1 said I had the wrong version, but 9.0.2 uninstalled the existing patch and then re-installed.

I ran 9.0.3 and 9.0.4. Without rebooting, I started FrameMaker and see the same issue with editing an

existing variable - the fields are empty. Maybe rebooting my system will help?

BUT I can delete variables successfully, and I deleted several without a crash. One problem solved.

The Adobe Updater apparently does not install the latest versions for FrameMaker. I have run it whenever prompted.

Thank you VERY much for solving the crash! The editing issue remains.
