Question

FM keeps deleting fonts

I'm curious if anyone has come across this issue and how they resolved it. I am new to FM but even our IT folks cant figure out what is going on. When I use FrameMaker almost every time it deletes the fonts that are being used in the document and we have to reinstall them all over again to my computer. They aren't just deleted from FM, but from my entire computer.

I have seen posts about how it can happen and that you have to reinstall them, but this happens almost every time I use FM and I can't keep reinstalling them several times a day. Has anyone found a permanent solution or perhaps what I am doing wrong that is causing this?

Thank you.

Often to get around these sort of issues, the "best practice" is to always use the Adobe PDF printer instance as your default printer inside FM. There's a plugin that can kick in when you fire up FM to flip your Windows default printer to Adobe PDF while maintaining a "real" printer outside of FM. It's called SetPrint and is a freebie.

Unfortunately SetPrint does not work with FM 2022.

I do not know any alternative than manually setting the printer.

Oh! So sad - use it every day (when I'm in FM12)

Ah, that's helpful, Daniel. As per the file you linked to: FrameMaker reads font information stored in the printer driver so that it can make fonts stored at the printer available for use within FrameMaker. In some cases, changing the default printer can change one or more fonts available in FrameMaker.

Did you check to see if the files were literally removed from your Fonts folder, or were you just trusting the FrameMaker error message? The error message is misleading because it says the fonts are missing, but leaves off the words "because you are using a different printer driver". As both Jeff and I said, we've we've never heard of FrameMaker actually uninstalling fonts from your Fonts folder.

It sounds like you are ok now. Moving forward, keep an eye on View > Panels > Fonts to make sure your expected fonts are listed, and View > Panels > Console to look for unexpected substitutions. If you distribute your file as a PDF, in Acrobat/Reader you can see the fonts used in the PDF in File > Properties > Fonts.

Hi Daniel:

I have not experienced this, nor have I heard about it. Would you mind sharing some of the links you've found so that we can take a look?

And include the specific font names and font format (OpenType/TrueType/Type1) and FrameMaker version?

Thank you for your reply. Of course now I am not getting the error and I didn't happen to take any screenshots. Here is a link to the troubshooting page similar to the error I was getting: https://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/using-framemaker/user-guide/WS29EC2C04-CFFB-43ef-AB37-8B59F81664C2_ver12.0.html

We have unchecked the "Remember Missing Font Names" and that seems to have corrected the issue now that we have reinstalled the fonts again.

Sorry I forgot to mention this is FM 2022. It was every font (Mostly Bookman and Futura) that was used in a specific project, which is really weird. The project seemed to be deleting them for some reason.

What version of FM are you using? I don't ever recall a discussion of fonts disappearing in FM (or from workstations).
