FM9: Book within a book - problem with TOC

Hi,

I’m working with FM9 and I need help.

The situation is as follows: There is a book, let’s call it the main-book , in the main-book are some fm-documents and there is also a fm-book. Let’s call this one the sub-book. In the sub-book I’ve made a TOC. When I update the sub-book and print it to PDF the TOC is ok.

Now the problem: When I print or save the main-book to PDF the TOC from the sub-book is disappeared.

Is there anyone who can help me with this problem? I need the TOC in the sub-book.

Kind regards,

Kees

    Hi Kees,

The generated files in the sub-books (Child Books) for example TOC, Index etc are ignored while PDF generation. This is an intended functionality. Ignoring the generated components also aids in proper numbering scheme for components in child books.

If you want to include such generated files in child books in your output PDF you can use this workaround.
    1. Open all files in main book and the sub-books.
    2. Delete the generated files in the sub-books. Do not save the book file.
    3. Add the existing TOC, Index or any generated files again using Add>File..
Note that the icons for generated files and non-generated files are different and can be noticed in the Book View.
    4. Update the numbering in both the books.
    5. Save As PDF the main book.
    6. After the PDF is created run File>Revert to Saved Book for both the books to bring them back in original shape. You can also close all files in the session without saving any files.

    Hi,

I've tried to make PDF the way Nakshatra told me, but it is not working. Maybe I do something wrong.

But when it should work it is to much work to do this every time I need publish to PDF, because I have more than five child books and I need to make PDF almost every day. The chance for mistakes is too big.

Does anybody know an easier way to solve my problem?

    Kind regards,

    Kees

    Kees,

You could try this as an alternate workaround.

Make another copy of each of the child books and use a different name. Within those new books, replace the generated files with a regular FM file that imports the respective generated file (TOC, IX, etc.) by reference , i.e. a text inset. This effectively should make the two books visually identical except that to update the new book, you have to update the old book - just as before.

Then create a new master book that uses these new copies. Since there aren't any "generated" files in this book's sub-books, you should be able to get the TOCs and IX files in the PDF.
