FM9: new book functionality (folders) ... new page for each file ?

Hi there,

I have a lot of separate files (around 300) used in three books in a file-in-file-in-file structure (FM7.2); not all files are used in all books.

Now I'm testing the new book functionality (FM9) of using folders and it should look similar to the following:

Book_1.book

- TOC.fm

- Chapter_1.fm

- Chapter_2.fm

- Folder_2

   - Section_2_1.fm

   - Section_2_2.fm

   - Folder_2_2

     - Sub-section_2_2_1.fm

     - Sub-section_2_2_2.fm

     - Sub-section_2_2_3.fm

   - Section_2_3.fm

   - Section_2_4.fm

- Chapter_3.fm

....

Apart from the page numbering which I need to figure out I have the problem that FM starts a new page for each file.

That is fine and wanted for files on first level (Chapter_1.fm, Chapter_2.fm, ...) but not for files on other levels.

I have checked everything (all documents have the same flow, pagination is set to Anywhere, nothing special in Format > Page Layout > Pagination).

Is there a way that a fm-file does not start on a separate page?

Thanks for any ideas!

I believe the behavior is based on how most printers work; they understand that a new file begins on a new page because most printers print onto cut paper sheets. In the old days, paper was available as continuous unperforated rolls, or as continuous fan-folded perforated sheets. Printers could be set to begin new files immediately after the previous one ended, and to issue new-page commands when they determined that the proper number of lines were printed on the current page.

Arnis' posting suggests your best approach - text insets.

    Thanks for your answers!

Text insets is what I meant by "file-in-file-in-file structure"; e.g. we have a file with text insets - these text insets are files with text insets - and these text insets ... :-) so you see why I wanted to use the new book functionalities of FM9.

Anyway, now I know that a fm-file starts on a separate page and I can stop fiddling around with the new book functionalities and focus on restructuring the "file-in-file-in-file structure" to one level.

I also have the same problem, For: eg:

I have a Chapter(1) has multible sections(1.2.3..) as a separate framemaker files in a book in the following order.

    1.1 General info.fm

    1.2 Engine Assembly Removal.fm

    1.2.1 Fuel Filter Removal.fm

    1.2.2 Fuel Filter Installation.fm

    1.3 Engine Assembly Installation.fm

If i have book file for the chapter1 and when i publish it as pdf, each sub sections starting from new page. But i want sections 1.2.1 and 1.2.2 should be immediatly starting from the same page and continouly flowing without page break.

If you want the files to flow continuously without any intervening space or pages, you need to use a text inset structure in a new file rather than a book file for the sub-sections and lower levels.

    Otiw,

Is there a way that a fm-file does not start on a separate page?

    I don’t think so.

Have you set the pagination and numbering properties for each file at the book level?
