Font errror when opening some FrameMaker files

When opening some FrameMaker files in Windows 7, my clients are getting the following message:

The FrameMaker Console provides these details:

The "Arial Black Bolded" Font is not available.

"Arial Black Heavy" will be used in this session.

The "Arial Black" Font is not available.

"Arial Black Heavy" will be used in this session.

The "Arial Black Bolded Obliqued" Font is not available.

"Arial Black Heavy" will be used in this session.

Even if you click OK on that message, and save the file, the same message appears the next time the file is opened.

My clients had this same problem when we upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 3. I found a resolution regarding the Windows XP OS on this forum, but it does not apply in this case.  My clients have FrameMaker 9.0.4 installed and Windows 7 64-bit (we had 32-bit Windows XP).  I appreciate your help.

Is it possible for you / the users to determine whether the working vs. non-working files originated from WinXP SP2 vs. SP3? Or possibly experiment by creating docs on both SP2 and SP3 system, to see if the service pack causes the difference?

Also, I wonder if there happen to be differences between working and non-working Win7 systems in terms of what other apps are installed, e.g. whether another app might have installed an older version of Arial on some systems but that app wasn't installed on all of the systems.

MS has a page about Arial and Arial Black that lists their products that supply it:

    http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/font.aspx?FMID=1709

    http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/family.aspx

Another comparison would be to compare the MIF files saved from working vs. non-working files, to see if there is any difference in the way the fonts are listed in the paragraph tag catalogs and also in the actual paragraphs where they're applied. There's a great freebie MIF viewer at

    MIFBrowser

    which works perfectly on Win7.

    Sheila -

Thank you for all of your thoughtful troubleshooting ideas.  However, the team who uses FM has decided that there is now too much troubleshooting involved and it's just easier for them to change the font on the problematic files.  This string can be closed or cancelled -- we will not be proceeding with the suggestions you made.  We really appreciate the time and effort of everyone who responded --- many thanks.

The message keeps reappearing because in FM preferences, they have "Remember missing fonts" activated.

If they turn that OFF, FM will update the font preferences and go on.

Art - Thank you for your quick response to our problem.  Here's what my client replied:

The problem with changing the “Remember Missing Font Names” setting is that it causes all font substitutions to be accepted permanently. FrameMaker is currently making inappropriate substitions, for example so that our manual titles are not italicized as they should be.

We appreciate your help.  Many thanks.  Melissa

Melissa, the names that the error is reporting are a clue to the problem. Notice that they're "xxx-ed" names, like Bolded and Obliqued instead of Bold and Oblique.

The "-ed" names are a result of using what is called "synthetic" font properties, in other words the program is creating the bold or oblique but the font itself does not have those characteristics built into it.

This often happens when content comes from a word processing or data entry source, or from another operating system. If FM doesn't know how to interpret the "bold" then it  "synthesizes" the result -- this is pretty much the electronic equivalent of what we used to do a million years ago by double-striking a typewriter key in order to make a word "Bold".

If FM was able to understand the requested font correctly, then it would suggest a name that doesn't use the "-ed" names.

Is this the thread you were meaning?

edit: also, what printer do they have set as their default printer?
