Font problems when switching to new computer (and new FM version)

My old computer with FM 7 doesn't work with PhotoShop or Illustrator anymore, due to only 10 GB free disk space. So I have a new computer. With that came FM 2022. A couple of years ago, when we switched from Windows 10 to 11, I tested on a new computer first. I installed FM 7 and couldn't get the fonts to work. So I installed Windows 11 on top of 10.

Anyway. Now I have a new computer and FM 2022, and lots of problems with the fonts. We use different versions of Futura in our documentation (I work with desk-top publishing for a large company that sells air conditioners and heat pumps, I make all our documentation).

I have now isolated the problem. Everything works perfectly IF, before I open FM 2022 each morning, I re-install 12 fonts. Don't ask me why, but if I don't do that, all fonts except Futura Light, are replaced with Times. Or all fonts are suddenly some kind of Symbols... 

So my question is WHY. The fonts I have to re-install all ends with .PFM. Is there a way around this, except switching to another font all together (and that means a LOT of work, as we have thousands of books/documents).

    I’m sorry to hear you’re dealing with so many issues related to your computer replacement!
    Each is significant, and worthy of its own solution.

    ​@Winfried Reng and ​@Jeff_Coatsworth are correct in assessing that your FrameMaker 2022 (v17) subscription (the only licensing available) gives you access to FrameMaker 2026 (v18)

    If you can’t get IT to install v18, at least ensure that you have v17.0.7 or later, as they were released in 2026 and have most fixes and features.

    As someone who ushered DTP into commercial printing in the early 90s, I also strongly suggest you replace your existing PostScript fonts (even the Adobe ones) with OpenType versions.

    Low-cost, non-Adobe versions of PostScript Type 1 fonts are notoriously hard to manage. So much so that Adobe moved away from their own lucrative standard to create the OpenType standard and re-engineered their library.

    Just as your FrameMaker 7.0 and Windows had to be upgraded, your PFM/PFB fonts are not likely to work harmoniously with FrameMaker 17/18, PDF engines (whether Distiller or internal FrameMaker) and Windows 11 

    An Adobe CC subscription gives you access to the entire font library. If you are still working with pre-Creative Cloud versions of Photoshop and Illustrator, you should consider the benefits and features of those apps as well.

    Given the 4k documents you are responsible for, you might consider having someone (like the fine folks who’ve chimed in here with suggestions) take a look at your existing content and documentation process. FrameMaker is great at managing thousands of related, connected documents, but a few thoughtful changes to the management of the formatting can make a world of difference.

    Hi Lena,

    Font files with PFM are PostScript fonts which are really, really outdated.

    I would assume that FrameMaker still supports PostScript fonts. Therefore FrameMaker should not be the issue.

    Do you install the PostScript fonts as administrator?

    Has FrameMaker been installed as administrator?

    I recommend to switch to an OpenType font, usually in a TrueType version. You can easily change your template to use another font. That’s not a big deal. 

    When you have FrameMaker 2022, you have a subscription. Why do you not update to FrameMaker 18?

    Thank you for your answer. No, I haven’t installed the fonts as an administrator, I have no idea how to do that. And FM is not installed as an administrator either…

    Speaking of changing fonts… I did a quick calculation… we have 219 books containing a total of 4241 fm-files. So it is a big deal :) All have their own set of styles (5-15 per fm-file).

    As FM is not visible in my Creative Cloud-account, I don’t think it’s a subscription. We bought it separately.

    Sounds like you’re working in a corporate environment - IT would probably have to the installations as admin for you.
    IIRC changing fonts in FM is as simple as telling FM what fonts you want substituted and then opening up the files. See 


    FM is not part of the CC - but it is visible as a subscription download in your Adobe ID account - however, I suspect that you’re NOT the account holder - somebody in IT is. You can’t purchase FM any more as a perpetual license; it’s all subscription now.
