Question

Font Substitution

I am using Framemaker 7.1 and am having a font issue.  I continue to get the error message that Framemaker is substituting my fonts.  I am using a font that I installed on my computer however it is not being recognized in Framemaker.  I am opening and editing files from another user and cannot seem to get the fonts to work correctly on my computer.  Is there a way that I can define the default font throughout the entire document or change the fonts that are automatically being substituted to the font of my choice?

I have tried to remove the preference 'Remember missing fonts' but that has not worked for me.

Thanks,

Cathy

What fonts isn't FM finding and what is it trying to substitute? Are they by any chance printer fonts?

A cycle of turning off "Remember missing font names", opening the file, letting FM substitute and then saving, will get rid of any missing fonts  every time. If it didn't work, check your steps carefully, you may have missed something.

To force a specific substitution, you have to make an entry in the maker.ini file in the [UnknownToKnownFontMap] section.

    For example,

To force Arial to be subsituted for Helvetica, if you don't have a postscript printer or Helvetica installed, enter:

    Helvetica, *, *, *=Arial, *, *, *

It's also possible that the fonts are off because the default printer is set for a hard copy printer somewhere... which would mean that FM is seeing files that exist on the printer but aren't truly installed on the computer.

To rule that out, it's a good idea to change the default system printer to whatever flavor of Adobe PDF printer you have installed.

I went through the "Remember missing font names" procedure again but the problem still exists.  The fonts are installed on my system.  I also installed them in the Fonts folder in Framemaker.  When I open the document, I can access the fonts from the Paragraph Designer but this is a tedious job.

The one thing that I didn't mention is that I am working on a Vista machine.  When I open the maker.ini file, nothing is there.  Is this because of the Vista operating system?  Or do I simply add the instruction?

    Thanks,
