Question

Frame 10 compatability with Acrobat 6.0?

Hi,

I current work with Frame 7.2 and Acrobat 6.0 to create product manuals.

If I were to get Frame 10, would there be compatibility problems since I  have Acrobat 6? I think it might be safer to get the latest of both  tools but does anyone have any bad experiences using an older version of  Acrobat with a newer version of Frame? It would give me a talking point if someone out there had specific knowledge of non-compatibility. I might guess that Frame 10 might have some new formatting that Acrobat 6.0 could not process.

Also, with my current installation, I sometimes get a PDF file that is upside down. The pages flow from 1 to the end but they are flipped 180 degrees. I can flip them over with Acrobat but it is weird behavior. It happens with either small or large documents. Has anyone else had that happen? Do I need to check with the Acrobat forum?

Yours,

Michael F

FrameMaker 10 should work fine with Acrobat 6, as long as you print to

the Adobe PDF virtual printer. (Actually A6 is old enough that I think

the virtual printer was still called Adobe Distiller, not Adobe PDF.) If

I recall correctly, Save as PDF will not work for you, since the older

version of Acrobat stores certain files in a different location, and

FM10 doesn't know to look there for them. Save as PDF has traditionally

been problematic for many, so most of us avoid it and print to the

    virtual printer, anyway.

With Acrobat 6, you will not be able to use any of the features where FM

lets you send a file for review and commenting, while retaining the

ability to reimport the comments. You might find this feature very

useful, and alone well worth the upgrade to Acrobat X.

In any case, follow Error7103's advice to not install more than one

version of Acrobat (or the PDF Creation add-on that comes with

FrameMaker) on you computer. They conflict with each other and cause

problems. You also should not install Adobe Reader if you have Acrobat.

Although not the topic of this thread, when you move above FM7 you will also be crossing the Unicode boundary.

... would there be compatibility problems since I have Acrobat 6?

Stand-alone FM10 includes what has been described in this forum as a stripped-down version of Distiller (for save-as-PDF and print-to-PDF; it probably does not support Distill .ps to .pdf, nor include the full Acrobat GUI). This version of Distiller "light" might be 9, and not X (10).

If you install FM10 and allow the installation of the add-on that includes PDF, it will probably work for saPDF/ptPDF, but may wreck Distiller 6 and Acrobat GUI 6.

If you disable installation of Distiller light, FM10 may have issues doing saPDF/ptPDF through Distiller 6. It might even have issues printing to .ps and then separately Distiller6'ing that to .pdf.

If you install Acrobat Pro X (which is included in TS3.5, by the way), there won't be any problems for FM10, but there might be issues for continued use of FM7.2. I'd be tempted to uninstall any prior Acrobats before applying it.

    ________

Disclaimer - I have not trod this ground. We edit in Fm7.1/Unix, then distill on Distiller9/Windows7-64 (that same platform has FM9, not yet used for production). My home system is FM7/Acro6 on WinXP-32. I'll be interested in the real-world experiences of anyone who has done the upgrade you are contemplating.
