Question

Frame crashes and I'm on a deadline - please help!

Hi all,

in the last couple years Frame proved to be very dependable, but unfortunately the last two weeks or so have become a nightmare!

I'm on FM 7.1p116 and Win XP Pro SP3 - just in case it should matter.

The current problem is, that Frame rather infrequently hangs when importing TIF-files by reference. The document is a mere 260 kB large, there are already about 20 TIFs (screenshots) imported, each weighing in at around 150 kB.

Now every time I'm importing a screenshot I hold my breath and keep all fingers crossed, hoping that Frame isn't going to hang again. If it does, it hangs so "severely", that I can't even kill it from the task list, and even rebooting the PC doesn't work (it takes the reset button to restart).

It also appears, that Frame doesn't generate a log at every crash. The last couple of logs from last week always show this entry near the top:

Internal Error: 7104, 6063074, 7693891, 0

There is hardly anything different compared to earlier projects, at least nothing that I'm aware of. One thing I noticed, however, is the length and "spelling" of the pathname to my files on my client's server. Someone chose to include spaces, hyphens, crosshatches and periods in that pathname, which by they way may be close to the length limit. Could Frame have a problem with that?

I also suspected that my Frame file got coorupted, but saving as MIF didn't change anything.

Since I don't know, what else I should be really looking for (can't change the client's pathname ;-)), could you forum members please let me hear a word of advice?

Thanks to all who cared reading up to here!

Johann

    Sheila, Art,

thanks a lot for the speedy responses!

In fact, I copied the whole book and referenced files to my local hard drive this afternoon. I'll post here, if that turns out to be the cure for this problem.

Nevertheless, I'll take a closer look at that plug-in Art mentioned.

    Thanks again,

    Johann

To expand on Shelia's suggestion, which would eliminate the possibility of network timeouts or other problems creating timeouts that cause the crash AND also eliminate the possibility of long path names with creative characters causing the problem...

Get Bruce Foster's Archive plug in to create a copy of the entire book structure that's transportable -- you can use it to easily create a local copy with all links an referenced objects intact.

    http://home.comcast.net/~bruce.foster/Archive.htm

And well worth the money for everyday use.

    Hello, Johann,
Are you downloading the FM files and working on them locally, or are you working with the files and graphics always residing on the server?

As a test, would you be able to try downloading everything to see whether that fixes the problem?

I'm sure the other folks here will come along with other troubleshooting steps -- we've all been on that deadline crunch at one time or another, so we empathize very much.
