FrameMaker 10 install problem

I just installed a trial FM 10 on my laptop and the install process (without warning) deleted my (licensed) copy of Adobe Acrobat Professional V8 and also Acrobat Reader. I reinstalled Reader x of course that was easy.  Now I need to figure what to do about Acrobat professional. I will have to engage my corporate IT to install that which is a painful process.  I just want to know why this was done.  Anyone?  In reality I only use the Acrobat Pro for generating PDFs from frame, ppt, and MS Word, and it appears that there is a plug-in/add-in that is letting me do that.  I am going to put in a license key for FM 10 soon and want to make sure that the pdf generation capability does not go away in 30 days.

ppendle, in addition to Mike's advice, it would also be advisable to be sure that you reboot one (or more) times between removing the various Acrobat products and for sure reboot before you reinstall.

Also, it is also advised that before you remove any of the Acrobat components that you go to Control Panel > Printers and look for any "Adobe PDF" (or similar names) printers listed. If there are any, right click and choose to remove them. Then reboot. Then remove any various Acrobat (Pro or Reader) versions. Then reboot again before proceeding with any reinstalls.

I'm not 100% about this but I believe Acrobat Pro v8 also used Adobe's activation / deactivation process, but in theory if you're installing on the exact same system it "shouldn't" trigger another activation. But if it does, although you may be able to install one more time without apparent problem, the second time might "use up" your activations, so if there is a third install needed you might have to call Adobe to get them to release the previous activations.

If you are going to reinstall both Acrobat and FrameMaker, I'd advise doing Acrobat Pro first, then check to be sure you see the "Adobe PDF" printer, then reboot your system and finally install FrameMaker, as Mike said being sure that you don't select the "install PDF creation add-on" or whatever it's confusingly called.

When you install FM10, there is a point in the installation process that

asks you if you want to install all features, with the only optional

feature being the PDF creation add-on. If you don't clear that checkbox,

FM installs a stripped down version of Acrobat Distiller. You should

never have more than one version of Acrobat on your computer, so I

believe that the installation process is uninstalling the older versions

to protect you. Adobe really should post a warning message about

installing that add-on for users that already have Acrobat.

You need to uninstall the PDF creation add-on, and reinstall Acrobat. It

has more features than the PDF creation add-on. Don't reinstall Reader.

You don't need it if you have Acrobat, which again has more features.

And Adobe warns against having more than one version on the computer, so

installing Reader X over Acrobat 8 is almost certain to cause problems.
