FrameMaker 12 conditional text and unresolved x-refs:

I just updated to FrameMaker 12 and wonder if they (Adobe) messed something up or I'm just missing something...

With all my conditions showing, I have no unresolved x-refs. When I set my conditions to "Per Condition," I get unresolved x-refs. So it's referencing something in my "not showing" condition. Cool. No problem. But when I highlight the unresolved reference and turn all my conditions on, my unresolved x-ref is no longer in front of me...because of the page count difference with all conditions showing, I have to go search for my highlighted, unresolved x-ref. Annoying! In FM 11, your page view would stay on your highlighted text. I can still resolve my x-ref, but it's just more work now than before because you have to scroll through your document to find where you were. Ick. Anyone else experience this? Is there a way around it? Thanks.

That's the ticket! Thanks, Arnis. It's funny how you can use a feature or pod regularly and still be unaware of all of its features at the same time.

Thanks, Arnis. I understand now. I don't usually use the Cross References pod, just the Cross Reference pod.

But I still don't understand something about conditions: As I'm setting up a document and putting lots of conditions in, I like to check my work as I go. So I'll work with all conditions showing and then switch to each of my "per condition" settings to make sure I set the conditions correctly. I used to be able to highlight the paragraph I was working in, set my conditions to "Per Condition" and my highlighted text would still be in view. But now I have to scroll to find it. Depending on how many conditions I have, that can be a lot of pages to scroll through. I'm not talking about x-refs here...just conditioned text.

    Thanks.

You can quickly jump to the page containing the insertion point using the following shortcut(s):

Press ctrl+G or click on the Page Status area, then select "Page Containing the Insertion Point"

and you're there. Again, no more scrolling to find the selection.

Try using your Cross-Refs pod to navigate to the unresolved x-ref.

But I have to turn all my conditions back on to get the unresolved x-ref source to show, and then the x-ref marker is now many pages up or down and I have to scroll to search for it. I know how to resolve the x-ref. I was just annoyed that I have to scroll through my document after turning my conditions back on.

If you select the unresolved x-ref in the Cross References pod, it will still maintain focus when you switch to the Conditional pod for changing the conditions and then back again to the Cross Reference pod. Then simply click on the selected entry in the Cross Reference pod and the selection will jump directly to that cross-ref location in your content. You don't have to scroll around the pages looking for it. That's one of the benefits of the pods.
