Framemaker 12 freezes when adjusting the tabs/margins on the ruler

Hello!

I am new to framemaker and have just started using it recently.  I have noticed that anytime I make an adjustment with the margins/tabs on the ruler, framemaker freezes and I need

to close the program completely and reopen it, losing whatever changes I have made since my last save.  I am not sure if anyone else has had this issue but if anyone has any

suggestions or needs more information please let me know.

Are you completely up to date in your patches? You should be at 12.0.4 now.

Just updated to 12.04, I will see if that helps, I was also having issues with the save as PDF freezing as well.

These types of adjustments are better made explicitly using the Paragraph Designer and then updating the paragraph style. If you just tweak it using the ruler, you are creating a local override for only the paragraph that currently has the cursor placed in it.

That being said, I haven't been able to make FM12 freeze by tweaking the margins or tabs using the rulers. Perhaps if you provide step-by-step instructions that give a repeatable freeze it might point to an underlying bug.

To help with losing data, you should turn on the autosave function in your Preferences and set a low time interval (e.g. 5 minutes).

Also, it might be a better idea to make these sorts of cosmetic adjustments in your template, rather than in an active document, and then apply the template once you're satisfied with the layout.

    Hi Arnis,

Thanks for the reply.  I am just 3 days in to learning framemaker with the help of some video tutorials.  I haven't figured out how templates work yet but I will and I will give it

a try.  I will also setup a low level interval for autosave (something i should do anyway,  I don't have the best track record for remembering to save my documents when they

are being created) I have updated to the latest release of framemaker 12 and will see if the freezing issue persists, if so I will try to get my exact steps and see if it can

    be recreated.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Joanna,

The purpose of templates in FM is to hold all of the formatting information (page layout, paragraph, character, table and object styles; cross-reference formats, variables, colours, etc.) that you would use in a particular style of a document. Any existing FM document can be used as a template for other documents. You import the "formats" from a template into the document that you are working on and then all matching tagged content takes on the characteristics defined in the template. This way, you can have a single FM document that can be quickly re-formatted to appear differently depending upon the output required (print PDF, online PDF, Responsive HTML Help, ePub, CHM, etc.) The FM Publish process can automatically apply a pre-defined template when creating the requested output format from an existing document/book.

Templates are a very powerful tool in FM and it will really help you in the long run to learn to use these proficiently.
