Question

FrameMaker 2019 crashing and losing work

I realise this may not be solvable without a lot of digging that I probably don't have time for, but I just wanted to check here in case there are any relatively simple fixes I can try.

In the past 2 days, FM has crashed approx 5 times, and every time, I have lost my recent changes and had to recreate them. I've just checked for updates and installed them in case that will help.

It's generally happened when I've tried to selected a numbered list from the paragraph catalog, (possibly every time, but I'm not certain). I'm working in unstructured FM.

When I restart the program, my backup files are behind the main versions so I can't use those to restore from.  I am saving frequently now, but is there anything else I can do?

Thanks!

    Hi everyone,

I haven't followed up any further, because I've had no more crashes since implementing Barb's suggestions last week. I also re-saved my files, and have been working with a different book since then. It all seems stable now.

Thank you for the help. I appreciate having such a responsive community to go to when I get stuck!

@Kat5FB8 - they should be called something like "FrameLog_date_version.txt"

    @Kat5FB8

We don't expect any crashes, I suggest you quickly  report this crash to Adobe at

fmerror-reports@adobe.com  with logs (.dmp file)    present at "%appdata%\Adobe\FrameMaker\15" and someone will quickly get back to you, cc me punagpal@adobe.com.

Till the time, you can use AutoSave functionality as suggested by @Barb Binder

    Thanks

Thanks Pulkit. I appreciate the help.

I've found the folder path, but I don't see an obvious log file. What should it be called?

You don't mention where the files are located, but if the location where you'e working on the files hasn't had any changes recently, then you might want to MIF-wash the files - maybe some crud has crept into them that's causing the crashing. If you can, try working on the files locally on your C:\ drive to see if that has any impact on crashing frequency.
Of course, if you can identify a consistent action that causes the crash, then log a bug in the Tracker (https://tracker.adobe.com/).

The files I'm working with are on my C:\ drive. I'm going to wait to see if it crashes again now I've done the steps Barb suggested. If it does, I'll try these next. Thank you!

The only time I ever enable auto-save is when I am working in an unstable environment. It's very rare, but it happens.

    Edit > Preferences > General > Auto-save every X minutes (pick 1 or 2).

I simultaneously become a compulsive saver—tapping Ctrl+S every few minutes. That means that the backup-files are almost up-to-date.

Is this new behavior on a previously-stable setup? Have you tried rebuilding preferences?

I only started this job at the beginning of March so only have a couple of weeks' experience with this setup to judge from, but it does seem to be worse now than initially.  I'll try both your suggestions. Thank you!
