FrameMaker 8 crashing constantly

Been running FM v8 (unstructured interface) for a couple of weeks now (Windows XP), and it crashes at least 2 times every day. I can produce PDFs fine (with the highly publicized "fix"), but I'm getting all kinds of mysterious memory-related error messages. It seems to happen on Paste operations fairly often, and it seems to happen most often when I'm working in graphic frames. Not seeing much in the forums about FM8 blowing up, and I can't make heads or tails out of the error logs that FM is generating. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. FM8 is now costing me time and trouble, and I'm not impressed.

A number of errors are traced to Font Cache, more so if you have more than a 1000 fonts on your machine. Please delete your font cache and try.

    Well, I am on 8.0p273. I think I'm officially a beta tester.

We have over 2.5GB of Ram. Some have reported that issue. But we have "enough."

    My configuration:
    XP version 2002 SP2
    Intel 4CPU 3.00GHz
2.99 GHz, 2.50 GB of RAM

We have not had any of these issues in v7.2. But, we may be too far into opening documents in v8.0 to roll back.

I am concerned that we have the 8.0p273 UPGRADE. Would a clean build of FM work better??? My coworker is also having the same issues.

We are now going from one issue to the next. Now, it will not allow us to save the settings for page numbering. So all our docs are in Roman numerals. We set it. It looks like it is saving the setting, but it is not.

We can PDF, but the page numbering is screwed up.

We can get the Update Book to work if we disable: Update All Text Insets field. We have always had this field checked in the past.

Unlike prior upgrades, we have had to open each and every single-sourced topic in the book and update them to FMv8.0. We haven't had to do that with previous updates. I'm thinking thousands of pages of this is going to turn into another nightmare.

Thanks for listening...I'm not exagerating. It's been really rough to explain this to other management.

    Phyllis,

The "upgrade" product is functionally the same as a new/clean install.
You're older FM versions are not affected as it installs entirely into
    its own folder(s).

Is the numbering issue with a converted book file (i,e, an older
version)? If so, try re-creating the book file instead.

When you get the crashes, are these happening during the same types of
operations or just seemingly random? What is the frequency of these
    crashes?

How exactly is the page numbering screwing up when you create the PDF?
How are you creating the PDF - Save As or printing to the Adobe PDF
    printer instance?

NICE. Thanks. One thing I've gotten right all day.

    Phyllis,

Not to minimize your troubles at all, but not everyone is having problems, and few shops are having the severity that you're experiencing. I was a beta tester, and then delayed adopting until after the first patch was released. But no major problems to report...

So at least consider that it's something in your configuration that's contributing.

Just in passing, did you ever post details of your system and network configs? It's useful trouble shooting info for the rest of us to have.

My bad. That should have read "Larry's original posting."

Thanks Art. Having a hard time navigating my way back to this thread!

It's been a nightmare. Now we are having trouble with page numbering remaining SAVED. Once I finally got updates to work, and removed Update All Text Insets (and doublechecked every last single-sourced topic to assure they were all in v8.0), I could update and PDF, but all the page numbers now remain in Roman numerals...can't save the changes when I reset them.

This sounds to me like product was pushed out the door because the date for release had arrived, and it hadn't been fully tested. I am performing excruciating test cycles for them...with a customer hanging over my shoulder...

    Phyllis,

If you scroll back to the earlier portion of the thread, a FM engineer posted his email address and asked people to send him crash logs...

I assume he's still looking for input.

    Cheers,

    "How do I engage them"[?]

Given that it's FrameMaker 8, is Adobe support of any help? (This of course being a user-to-user forum only intermittently browsed by Adobe personnel...)

    Cheers & hope this helps,

Would like an update from Adobe on this. How do I engage them.
    Thanks for any help.
