Question

FrameMaker crashes when opening certain translated MIF files generated by Lara Translate

Hello,

I'm experiencing an issue with translated MIF files and I'm trying to determine whether the problem is related to FrameMaker, the MIF format, or the translation process itself.

Environment

  • Source files: MIF files generated from a FrameMaker book
  • Translation platform: Lara Translate
  • Output: Translated MIF files
  • FrameMaker version: 2026 (18.0.0.206)

Issue

I upload multiple MIF files to Lara Translate for translation. Most translated files open correctly in FrameMaker, but certain translated chapters consistently cause FrameMaker to crash when I attempt to open them.

What's interesting is that:

  • The issue only affects specific chapters.
  • The same chapters fail repeatedly, even after being translated again.
  • Other chapters from the same project open without any issues.
  • The problem occurs across different target languages.
  • Re-translating the affected files produces the same result.

Troubleshooting Performed

  1. Uploaded the original MIF files again and requested a new translation.
  2. Compared successful and unsuccessful files at a high level.
  3. Tested multiple languages.
  4. Verified that the same chapters consistently fail while others succeed.

Observations

Because the failure is reproducible with the same source chapters, regardless of the translation attempt, I suspect one of the following:

  • Certain MIF structures in those chapters may be causing corruption during translation.
  • Specific translated strings or special characters may be breaking the MIF syntax.
  • The translated MIF files may contain invalid MIF markup that causes FrameMaker to crash during parsing.

Questions

  • Has anyone experienced FrameMaker crashes with translated MIF files generated by external translation platforms?
  • Are there known MIF elements that are particularly vulnerable to corruption during machine translation?
  • Is there a recommended method or tool for validating MIF file syntax before opening the file in FrameMaker?
  • Are there FrameMaker logs, crash logs, or validation tools that could help identify the exact location of corruption within a MIF file?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Just a suggestion and it may absolutely not work - try uploading the mif to chatgpt and ask that it verifies that all mif code is valid. It may be that this is not an allowed procedure  for security reasons, but IF it is a public document, it might be worth it giving it a try.

I have experienced a similar problem in the past. Make sure ALL the placeables/tags in the source document are also included in the target document (in approximately the same place). A single missing/misplaced tag can cause all sorts of issues, including causing FM to crash.

    Hi,

I would do this test: Upload your MIF file. Do nothing. Export the file from this platform.

    Can you opem this file?

I would also open the exported MIF file with MIF Browse. Do you notice any peculiarities?

    http://www.grahamwideman.com/gw/tech/framemaker/mifbrowse.htm

And you could compare the MIF code before and after the translation process with e.g. Notepad++.

My feeling is that Lara Translate creates invalid MIF. Does Lara Translate say that it supports FM 18?

Do you use any new FM 18 features?

    Best regards, Winfried

That was the first thread I saw but no solutions.

Before opening the offending MIF file, choose View > Panels > Console and then open the MIF file. See if any messages are written there.

This is the error I'm getting. No messages on the console. I can properly open the MIF file in programs like Notepad++ and I can see the translated text just fine, but I'm not sure what the problem is.
