FrameMaker - mirroring files

We are a group of authors creating and updating user manuals in Framemaker, but working across to sites.

All necessary files are located on one server and for authors in that location, there are no performance issue. Authors located on the different server experience serious file lags and delays working with books.

Does anyone have a suggestion to overcome this problem - to give improved Framemaker performance for all?

You probably need to implement a source control system to "check out" files and work on them locally, then "check in" the files after finishing working on them.

Geography and embedded object policies play a role here, even if using a first tier cloud-served plain file system (much less a CMS that FM works with).

If the sites are not on the same campus, the speed of the various internet connections can set a limit on practical remote simultaneous document sharing.

If the enterprise doesn't have some guidelines on the file size of individual imported objects, and/or the maximum number in a single FM file, performance can get clobbered as well.

In a previous position, regional shared access worked (city to city), but US-UK did not. Opening files of any size across the pond was glacial. We had to work with local mirrors, which of course raises sync issues, and potentially destructive inconsistencies if a CMS is not being used.

Quick test - archive up a typical document. Do an ftp or other network file copy. If it take over 30 seconds, shared global document access is probably not your answer.
