Question

Fuzzy Graphics

FrameMaker 8 using Windows XP version 2002, sersvice pack 2.
In my documents I use screenshots taken by "Prnt Scrn" brought into PaintShopPro 9, cropped, sized and saved as TIFFs. There is minimal color as these are shots of a software application. The screenshots are fuzzy when viewed on line; I've tried 96 dpi, 150 dpi, 300 dpi, and 600 dpi all with the same result. When converting to PDF they are still fuzzy. When printing they are clear. Does anyone have suggestions?

That works pretty well, Jack. Do the JPEGs always come in VERY large?

    Tracy,
Not sure if this will help but here's what I do with graphics. I simply screen capture them with any available tool, save them as a JPEG (Framemaker likes those), import the JPEG into my anchored frame, and size the image there. It always appears fuzzy in Framemaker but my printed pages and PDFs are perfect.

Thanks, I didn't realize FrameMaker used the screenshot for positioning. Well I sized a screenshot in PaintShop9 according to the size I wanted with no attention to the dpi and Paintshop created it at 72 dpi. I brought the screenshot into FrameMaker where it looked terrible. I created a PDF of that page with a Press Quality setting and it still looks bad. My goal is for my customer to read the documents in PDF format online and be able to make sense of the screenshot.

    Tracy,

By viewed on line, I assume you mean within FrameMaker. If so, that is to be expected because FrameMaker is simply displaying a rough version for the purposes of positioning the screenshot within the document. When it prints, the full resolution is printed.

They are probably fuzzy in the PDF because your PDF settings are set to something that resamples the screenshots to a low resolution. My guess is your PDF settings are set to Smallest File Size, which downsamples your images to 100 dpi. Try the Standard setting or one of the Press quality settings.

By the way, setting the dpi when you import the image controls the size of the image on the page. It does not change the native resolution of the image you are importing.
