Question

H2 Numbering restarts for no apparent reason.

I am having a numbering issue that seems like a glitch, which I can't seem to solve, In one instance and going from an H2 3.2 followed by body text, and an anchored frame at the bottom of the page. At the top of the next page, I have the next H2, but it restarts at 3.1. This doesn't happen all the time but I can't find the condition that is causing it. Any ideas?

Can you post a screen capture of your Numbering tab of the paragraph designer? (Probably best to show the H1 style too.)

Thanks, here you go. What do you think?

    I think H1 should be <$sectionnum>.<n=0>, but that's me. 🙂

They look okay to me, but I'd be more comfortable if you specified all numbering levels for each tag. You definitely should have a series label in there.

    H1: H:<$sectionnum>.<n=0>.<n=0>

    H2: H: <$sectionnum>.<n+>.<n=0>

    H3: H: <$sectionnum>.< >.<n+>

What you have set up should work, so all I can think is that you've assigned numbering to something other than headings and that's stepping on things because you didn't use a series label to tell FM that they're not in the same numbering sequence. Do you have numbered steps or something like that in between the two H3s?

Ooops, didn't notice that you weren't doing numbers at all levels. Try:

    H1: H:<$sectionnum>.<n=0>.< =0>

    H2: H: <$sectionnum>.<n+>. < =0>

    H3: H: <$sectionnum>.< >.<n+>

note the space before the =. It lets you reset the number without it being visible in the text.

And if you're numbering your anchored frames, that's probably the issue if you didn't use a series label.

Assuming you're in unstructured, you could try a MIF wash. If that doesn't work, open the MIF and find the text that's misnumbering, then see if there's anything in the MIF before it that shows a reset of numbering.

Thank you, could you define MIF Wash?

    Open .fm in FM.
    Save as MIF to .mif.
    Close .fm, open .mif.
In newer versions of FM, there may be a built-in function for this, but it takes less time to do it manually than to find the menu item.
