    Dorothea,

How did you create the subscript "6" in the first place? I guess it was using the button in the formatting toolbar or using the Character Designer dialog?

If so, this is what we call »hard formatting« or a »formatting override« and is considered bad style. To unleash the full capabilities of FrameMaker you should make your formatting with predefined paragraph styles and character styles only.

Most format-based templates I have seen have predefined character formats for superscript and subscript characters. Select Format > Character > Catalog to show the Character Catalog. Does it have a format for subscript characters. If not, you need one. If yes, select the "6" and click that format.

Using this method, the subscript will work with the cross-reference.

well things didn't exactly go as i hoped because even if i achived subscript inside cross reference,

updating book later turned it again to regular character, did i do something wrong??

    and something else,

wherever subscript appears at toc, from this point and all text after that does not link at all unless i use the link tool at acrobat...

is that something that i can fix through FM?

You need to use a character format for the subscript rather than simply Format > Style. And if the cross-reference and its source are in different documents (i.e. you are in a FrameMaker book) the character format must be in the catalogues of both documents.

(When I tested this just now, the character format didn’t take effect until I re-made the cross-reference. “Update references didn’t do the trick.”)
