Question

How is the Undo History palette supposed to work?

Can any describe a workflow where the “Undo History” palette makes sense?

This is an example where I find the palette confusing…

  1. I create a new document - Undo History does nothing
  2. I change the document from single to double page - Undo History does nothing
  3. I go to master pages - Undo History records my move to master pages
  4. I modify a text box - Undo History records my modfication
  5. I add a  new master page - Undo History resets and deletes all previous history

How does this make sense?..

    Hi Bjørn:

I start my intro classes by explaining that in FrameMaker, Edit > Undo (Undo button, Ctrl+Z, History panel) works for some activities and not others. And that certain activities will clear history, and remove the option to undo. I show them how to recognize undo availability by looking at the Quick Access Bar to gauge if the button is available, or grayed out.

Top image: Undo not available, Bottom image: Undo available

We first encounter this in class when we change the number of columns and watch to see that FrameMaker isn’t kidding about the (No Undo) message shown under the Update Entire Flow button. I explain that is just how it works and that we need to focus on how to change direction without relying on Undo.

We don’t keep the History panel open in class, and I rarely see it open when engaged in post-class coaching after my students have had time to edit their workspaces. And personally, I never open outside of class.

The history is pretty much for text editing. Anything layout related wipes it clean.
