An easier, alternative approach is to use the Paragraph Designer.

    1. Place the cursor in any Heading1 paragraph.

    2. Rename the Heading1 to Heading2 in the "Paragraph Tag" box .

    3. Click "Update All". FM will prompt you if you want to change the name of all of the Heading1 tags.

    4. Place the cursor in any original Heading2 (it will show as an override, and still have the formatting as originally defined in the document).

    5. In the Paragrpah Designer click on the "Update All" button. This will then change all of the converted Heading1 tags to take on the original Heading2 formats.

Done in about 5 mouse clicks.

Both eminently useful methods! Search/replace by pasting might have a slight edge when dealing with 2,000 pages spread across multiple chapters, though. btw – I'm curious about the structure of a document where all level one headings can be demoted to level two. Are there no lower levels in these 2,000 pages? How will the document work without level one headings?

    Hi,

Place your insertion mark into a Heading 2 paragraph. Click the right mouse button, go to Copy Special and select Copy Paragraph Format.

In the Find/Change dialog select Paragraph Tag and enter Heading 1 in the Find field. If you have similar paragraph formats names, activate Consider Case and Whole Word.

In the Change field select By Pasting.

    Then search and replace.

    Best regards
