How to edit Framemaker 10 book using Framemaker 2019?

I am using Framemaker 2019 to edit a book created with Framemaker 10. When opening the book, I am prompted to convert it to the current Framemaker format (i.e., 2019). I do so and can then edit the various documents within the book without any issues. But Framemaker 2019 crashes when I select "EDIT/UPDATE" to update cross references and table of contents, list of figures, and list of tables. Any suggestions?

In addition to the other great advice you are getting, is there a requirement to be able to open the revised book in FM10?

This is easily done, but imposes restrictions on FM11-2019 feature use, as well as extra final steps.

At this time multiple users; some equipped with FM10 and others with FM2019. So, yes, need to open/edit books created with a different version. Can you suggest source of information that explains?

Interchange between different vintages of {unstructured} FM between versions 8 through 2020 is pretty straightforward:

    • Avoid using features present only in later versions (as these will be lost).
    • In later versions, save the .book and the .fm component files as current version .mif (not as FM7 mif).

FM10 can open the MIFs (but will ignore any constructs not supported in FM10).

Interchange between FM versions only 1 major release apart (e.g. FM2020 & FM2019) is even easier, as FM can always save directly to prior-rev binaries; but that's not your situation. Interchange to FM7 or earlier is more complicated (due to Unicode), but that's not your situation either.

Another suggestion: Try to perform each part of the update separately. That can help you find out exactly where the problem is.

As Jeff said definitely open and save all files before you continue with a book update!

When you select all files in the book and press SHIFT, while you click on File, you can open (or save) all files of the book together.

When FrameMaker crashes, after you had saved all files with FM 2019, do a MIF wash: Open all files. Save as MIF. Then save as FM again. This consolidates the files and often helps.

Did you save the converted FM docs first before trying to update the book?

Jeff, did not do so originally. But followed your suggestion with success. Thank you!
