How to import 3 new layouts for 3 different master pages in same book

I have 3 different master pages for each chapter of my book. I need to make different changes to each  master.   I know I can import the page layout from one master but when I do this the layout affects all 3 masters making them the same.  Is there a way to import masters individually?  For example, I want to import new layout of master page 1 to all the pages using master page 1 and import the new layout for master page 2 to all the pages using master page 2 and so on......   I am using FrameMaker 10.

Are these single-sided or double-sided documents?

What are the names of the Master Pages in each file? FM always will have a Left/Right in a double-sided (and only RIght in a single-sided) layout. It's the names that are important, since FM will replace/overwrite any item of the same name (or add it, if it has a different name).

If you've created custom Master pages, then just make certain that the names are different, e.g. you master page 1 could be called "First", master page 2 could be called "Layout2", ec.

You cannot rename the Left/Right page names in FM.

These are double sided documents.  My master pages are called Left, Right and First.   If I am understanding correctly, I should create a custom page called Layout1 (for example) for the new Left master page and a custom master page called Layout2 (for example) for the new Right page.  Can  I apply the new pages globally, for example, tell FrameMaker to replace all Left master pages in the whole document with Layout1 and replace all Right master pages with Layout2 etc.?

You can *edit* the Left/Right page layouts, but I'm not clear on what the actual issue is with your design.

Are the Left/Right page designs different in each of your chapters? If not, then you just need to setup a template that uses a First, Left & Right master page design.

You might be better off creating a blank document and create the desired page layouts there. Then use this as a template to import *only* the Master page layouts into your book.

Alternatively:

1) You can use the Format > Page Layout... > Master Page Usage options to remap the currently used   Left and Right pages to your custom ones. However, any new pages automatically being added will use the default the Left/Right pages for an autoconnected flow.

2) You can use the Master Page Mapping (Format > Page Layout... > Apply Master Pages...) to apply the custom Masteer Pages as required. You need to configur the Reference page Mapping table to use most of your common paratags in the document to apply the desired custom right, left or First pages.
