how to insert datas in a document

Hello,

I would lile to have 2 types of documents :

Doc1 :  The main document with text. In the text I would like to put some fields.

Doc2 : The document containing only the fields. In this document I enter some datas in the fields, and these datas goes automatically inside the fields of the main document.

By example in the Doc2, I have a field called "address". So I enter the address in this document, and the address is automatically entered in the field "address" of the Doc1.

How to do it with FrameMaker ?

So that said, in an effort to expedite this, can you just send me the file(s), Pierre?

Hi Pierre:

Did you remember to Set Window to As Is when you created the character style?

Hi Barb,

In character designer, for "Essai style", if I select "set window to as is, I have this result :

Hi,

In a character format you should only set the needed properties. Everything else to As Is.

Can you enter your text of the variable and apply the character format without variables? What does happen?

In your variable definition do not forget to apply the Default Paragraph Format at the end of the variable definition.

I had not seen your message before.

Best regards, Winfried

There are a number of ways to auto-populate & auto-update a text string in an FM document, and I've used all of them at one time or another. Here are five off the top of my head:

  • Variable, perhaps defined in the project's template.fm or similar
  • Xrefs (by $paratext), to the defining instance in the same or another document
  • Text Inset, from another file
  • API call to external database, using an FDK function
  • Import of EPS or PDF text file

I have tried to use the "Variables". So I created a variable called "adresse", and for this variable I have set a new character style ("Essai Style"). But in "Essai Style" if I try to change the font, I have an error message saying : "some characters use format overrides". Why ?
