I am completely new at using framemaker and I am trying to find out how to update the templates for framemaker 9. My company has some new templates it uses but the person who was supposed to teach me how to update the templates is unavailable and the info he left for me on how to update the template is quite confusing. I would appreciate any help offered.

    John,

The basics are to use the existing template to create a new file, modify that file and test it.

DO NOT MODIFY THE TEMPLATE ITSELF, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE A NEW USER.

Then make a backup copy of the existing template and save the new file back as the same file name.

    Cheers,

Your question is a little vague.

Are you updating templates from an older version of Frame to version 9? If so, simply open the template file, and save it. It will be version 9.

Are you trying to import a new template into existing documents? If so, open both the document and the new template. Then in the window for the exisiting document, select File > Import > Formats. In the dialog, select the new template in the From list at the top. Select the formats you want to import (probably all of them), and click Import. FrameMaker imports the new formats, master pages, reference pages, etc. from the new template into the existing document, overwriting any formats that use the same names. Any format with a different name is retained.

If you have a book, you can select all the files in the book file and then File > Import > Formats, and do it in one operation.

    Good luck,
