I need to make continued lines! In text, not table! Help please!

I've searched everywhere, user manual, help, googled, to no avail. Do you mean to tell me that when creating books

in Framemaker you can't produce a continued line?

Linda, have you considered using Master Page Mapping?

Depending on whether or not the pages contains a heading, you can semi-automatically assign different master pages. The alternate master page would contain the "continued" line.

This approach requires you use one or more dedicated paragraph formats for the text that eventually breaks onto "continued" pages.

Here's an outline. Just ask if you need more details:

1 - Create an additional master page. On the new master page, crop one line's height off the top of the body text frame. In this place, insert a background text frame that contains the "continued" line.

2 - To create an empty master page map (if there is none yet) click Format > Page Layout > Apply Master Pages.

3 - Change to reference pages view and edit the master page map. Add two rules to the master page map like in the following example.

1st row of the master page map:
        Paragraph Tag Name: Heading1
        Right-Handed Master Page: Right
        Range Indicator: Until changed

2nd row of the master page map:
        Paragraph Tag Name = BodyContinued
        Right-Handed Master Page: Continued
        Range Indicator: Until changed

In the example above, I assume the heading is "Heading1", the dedicated para format for text on continued pages is "BodyContinued", and the name of the master page is "Continued".

4 - Make sure to use the paragraph formats used in the master page map.

5 - To apply master pages, click Format > Page Layout > Apply Master Pages.

6 - That should be all. By the time you publish the document (or whenever you like), re-apply the master pages, as they do not automatically update when inserting new text.

    LinMarie,

Just create a custom Cross-Reference that doesn't use the <$paratext> building block and has the "continued" formatted the way you want it. Then link to the paragraph that continues. This also provides an automatic clickable link in a PDF.

    LinMarie,

Unfortunately there isn't a built-in way to do continued lines other than in tables, no.

If you can give us some idea of your page layout and the type of document, # of columns, etc, somebody may be able to suggest some alternatives.

I've got a 2-column layout. This is going to be a 2,000+ page book. The content (which is program-generated using MIF coding) consists of a heading followed by text followed by the next heading followed by text, and on and on. I need to capture the heading and use it in a continued line at the top of left-hand pages in the left column only. I don't want to use dictionary running heads, which was a programming chore to make work in another section of this book. Thanks!

    LinMarie,

This requirement to having it (continued) in a running header is different from what I posted in the other reply (continued as in linking to an article in a magazine style layout). You can try to use the $marker1 and/or $marker2 building blocks to add the continued text into your text body at the appropriate locations and then pick it up in the running header/footers. Just remember that FM searches backwards from the current page to satisfy a match, you will also need to reset (blank content) the markers.
