Import specific Variable Definitions | Adobe FrameMaker

Is it possible to import specific variable definitions from one Adobe FrameMaker file into another?

Example: I have the following variable definitions in "fileOne.fm":

  • Item 1
  • Item 2
  • Item 3
  • Item 4

I want to import variable definitions Item 2 and Item 3 into "fileTwo.fm".

If I do File -> Import -> Formats -> Variable Definitions ("fileOne.fm" selected), I will import Item 1, Item 2, Item 3 and Item 4. However, I do not need Item 1 and Item 4, as they shall have their own variable definitions. I need only Item 2 and Item 3.

P.S. I am using Adobe FrameMaker 2015.

Alternatively, you could use a MIF snippet (a simple text file a few lines long) to define and import a single (or multiple) specific variables. Details and an example are found in this message thread:

Have you tried taking a copy of fileOne.fm and calling it something like "variablesTwoThree.fm" then stripping out the undesired variable definitions and then using it as the import source for fileTwo.fm?
