Insert a blank page in FrameMaker using Special > Page Break

I've been back in the Word world for the past couple of years. I have been trying to insert a blank page in FrameMaker using Special > Page Break and get no result. I took a look and checked the help and can't figure out what the problem is. Any ideas?

In the past I was using version 5 or 6 and am now using version 11 - Unstructured.  It seems so simple to add a blank page but it isn't working like I remember from the past.  I've been away from Framemaker for about four years.

It's probably worth pointing out how this feature actually works. It isn't intended to create blank pages per se. It's intended to force content to start a new page.

What it does is apply an override to the current paragraph that is identical to performing a:

  • Format > Paragraph > Designer
    Properties: Pagination
    Start: Top of Page
    [ Apply ]

So if the cursor is not in a paragraph, nothing will happen.

Even when it works, it may save a few clicks, but it's still an override that will be lost if you ever [ Update All ] on that para format with Remove Overrides.

Creating a para tag for the purpose of generating a blank page is more stable.

What's the purpose of the blank page? If it's not for flow content and it's supposed to stay in the same location, you can use the Special > Add Disconnected Pages option. Otherwise, for just empty space in the current flow, create a new paratag with both Space Above and Space Below settings equal to your text frame height.

Elegant. That eliminates the problem of the subsequent para needing to be Top of Page, at the minor expense of not allowing more than a single line of meta text in the para (if done as hidden).

I might add that we also usually AMP-apply a Master Page of "Blank Page" to para fmt "Blank Page", and it omits Running H/F, and sometimes really is completely blank, depending on book section.

Create a Paragraph Format named, say "Blank Page".

Set the Pagination properties to Top of Page.

Set the Next Pgf Fmt to "Heading1" or some other format that also starts a page.

Hit return to create an empty para wherever you need a blank page. Apply format Blank.

We do it this way, but with some frills (AutoNumber set to Blank Page:\ , Font Color set to Invisible Text, that color controlled by Color Views). This way, it's obvious what's been done, and you can using the text line for annotation regarding why.
