is it safe to use the auto-saved file when "An internal error ... writing imported graphics ..." occurs?

Hello,
I am using FrameMaker 16 over a network and regularly get issues, I think due to that situation. When the “An internal error occurred while writing imported graphics in this document. The file has been saved, but has lost some image data ...” occurs a file is written to disk with a random extension time-stamped at the time when I attempted to save. This file is noticeably smaller than the .fm file I am working with, however renaming the extension does open a file bearing some resemblance to the original, and with [at least some] of the images. 
Is it safe to use this file? The smaller size is concerning, however I would like to think it is useful in some way.

 

I have just performed a back-to-back, page-by-page test and it seems there is no definitive answer to just use the back-up. I was able to see the areas where I had been working (the work I lost was related to reconnecting referenced graphics from a donor file) and simply copied the known good elements into the other file.

    Unless you have multiple users accessing the same FM content, I would highly recommend that you move things local and use the network as a backup location.

    Hi,

    What does “writing imported graphics” mean? Do you use structured FrameMaker?

    I am not sure, if I understand correctly: You have a file which you work on and make changes. Then FrameMaker crashes and shows an error message and creates a file with a timestamp extension.

    You would lose lots of content which you had changed or created, when you continue with the original file. Is this correct?

    As I would not be sure that the crash file has all content and the correct formatting and conditions, etc., I would use the original file and copy the new/changed content from the crash file into this original file.

    If you really want to continue with the crash file, I would definitely copy everything into a new file and also save as MIF and then back to FM (MIF wash). This would correct any internal inconsistencies.

    Meanwhile I get any errors very, very rarely. I use FrameMaker 18.0.0. I would say that each FrameMaker update has less crashes. Therefore I can only recommend to update.

    Yes, I know that some people do not like subscriptions. However, you can always update. You have always the latest update with less crashes.

    I just had a discussion with another company entitity. They use a content management system. The initial costs are 12,000 Euro. And then 5,500 Euro service fee per year. Therefore FrameMaker is really a bargain!
