Question

Is there a way to enforce the display of "Previous View" and "Next View" buttons when creating pdf

I create many cross-refs in my documents but for these references to be useful they should be in some way enforced on the end-users with their corresponding buttons on the acrobat reader (or other pdf readers). People usually do not know that these buttons do exist.

My question is if there is a way to enforce the display of these buttons when creating pdf outputs from an FM project.

Hi @Cagataytech:

Possible scripting solutions aside, no, you can't control the display of the navigation buttons for the user in Acrobat/Reader when exporting a PDF from FrameMaker. As previously stated, you can tell them how to activate them themselves, perhaps on the opening page of the file.

But you can add PDF navigation buttons to a FrameMaker document, add hyperlinks on top of them and those will be visible on the exported PDF.

Specifically:
Insert » Hypertext » Command: Jump Back

Hi Deniztech,

With your cross-reference you can also apply a character format, so that the cross-reference is more striking: Bold and coloured or blue and underlined, whatever you like.

You can mention this in the beginning of your document that text with a specific style is somthing to click.

When the user hovers over a cross-reference the cursor turns into a pointer. Many users are curious and just click to see what happens. Best is, when your support tells the users about this in their trainings.

Best regards

Here is the explanation in the online help:

https://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/using-framemaker/user-guide/frm_single_sourcing-xrefs-manage-cross-references.html#topic_xrefs-manage-cross-references__section_xrefs-edit-cross-reference-format-dialog

All character formats are available as building blocks. Just insert one before your paratext building block and then after the the paratext back to Default Font.
