Isodraw CGM import problem in FrameMaker8

Hi,

We use IsoDraw 7.0 to create CGM files for import into FrameMaker versions 7 and 8 routinely. Lately, we have had a couple different problems when importing CGM files.

1) A few problem files that when imported acquire a gray box overlaid on the art. This is both viewable in Frame and prints out/pdfs that way. We had the latest CGM filters from Itedo/PTC loaded for Frame7 but discovered during experimentation that when we backed those out and reverted to the original CGM filters that came with Frame7 the graphics then displayed and printed correctly, although this workaround created a separate font issue for one person.

FrameMaker8 has its default installed CGM filters so I don't think I can change anything there. The few graphic files routinely import as gray boxes in Frame8.

My question is: has anyone seen this gray box behavior and found a fix for it in FrameMaker8?

2)A few files that when imported display correctly in FrameMaker but when printed/pdf'ed only the text of the CGM file prints out and the graphic vector art disappears. The same files imported into MSWord print fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

K McCain

You can toggle any of the filters on or off in either version of FM. It's all in the maker.ini file. The default filters are the IsoDraw ones in the [APIClients] section. However, the ImageMark CGM filters are still in the [Filters] section, just commented out with a ";" preceding the line. If you want to swap out the filters, just comment out the CGM fileters in the [APIClients] section by placing a ";" (semi-colon) at the start of the line and then delete the semi-colon fom the start in the [Filters] section.

For the IsoDraw filters, there also is a preferences file in the \filters folder that you can edit (always make a copy first!) to fine-tune your imports. See the optcgm.prf file. It's well commented to help make changes. Likewise, there's an emgm2.ini file with various settings that you may need to tweak for the older filter. There's some additional info available in this dated technote: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/320/320559.html

However, IIRC, IsoDraw can directly create PDF files (either raster or vector based upon user preferences). Why not go that route and then import the PDFs by reference into FM? This will probably give you the best fidelity.
