Link to a FrameMaker table in another FM file

Greetings,

Is there a way (direct or through scripting) that enables me to link to table in another FrameMaker file? I know it is possible to link to objects in Excel, Visio, etc. using Paste As Link; however, I am looking for a way to do the same with an FM table in another FM file. (We are using unstructured FM and trying to avoid introducing more conditional tags).

Thanks in advance,

Hani

Text insets - yes, I think so - I don't actually use them in any of my FM projects.

Hani,

   1. A text inset can consist of an anchor paragraph that contains only a table anchor and that table.

   2. A text inset must be an entire flow. You can put many flows in one FM file, either on body pages or on reference pages. Make sure each flow is tagged; you will use the flow tag to identify the flow to use when you create a text inset. The flows can be autoconnected if they are to hold a table that occupies more than one page. I work on one project that has some 70 flows on reference pages that are used as text insets.

Are you looking for a cross-reference to the other table in the other file? Or do you want the table itself to appear? If the latter, you could use a text inset to accomplish that.

Thanks, Jeff, for your reply. I want the table itself to appear in the target file. A text insert requires importing an entire file, right? The table I need to link to is one of tens of tables in the source file (and all the other tables are irrelevant for the new target file). Can it still be done without introducing conditional tags or moving the table into a standalone .fm file?

Thanks again!
