LOF wrapping issue

I have Figure 14-1 and 14-2 listed in my LOF that are too long. The leader goes to the proper right side of the page.  I entered a soft return at the point I felt the the titles should break, but the first line indents to around .625", while the second line is the one that should indent about .5" but is left aligned.  There are no tabs present on the first line, the Pargraph Designer has no settings for First, Left, or Right, and the leader tab stop is set at 6.25".  Didn't have this issue with the TOC.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

InDesign has an elegant solution to this specific situation that is missing in FrameMaker. Would you consider voting for this feature request?

    Hi Ken:

Generated files follow a series of rules, and the rules are not intuitive. You may find this list helpful:

    https://www.rockymountaintraining.com/adobe-framemaker-what-to-know-about-working-with-generated-files/

You said current contents are completely wiped out during regen, but not sure I agree with that. If generating from scratch, again, don't you have to delete the LOF, first, then generate? If I regen or update, there is no wiping out of anything.  Right?  The content is generated again if done from scratch, but generated exactly with what is tagged already. So, not sure what you mean when you say everything gets wiped out.

See rule number 5 in the linked post.

However, without generating the LOF, first, I would never know where (between which words) the NBS has to be added.

Correct. If you had been willing to share a screenshot of a problem line in the TOC, we could have been very specific on where to add the non-breaking spaces. Without a screenshot, we are working in generalities.

Strange that I could use Shift+Return in the TOC and it worked fine.

See rule number 5 in the linked post.

Ok, took a look at the list.  Thanks!

Matt, I understood that the NBSs go in the content (captions).  Don't think I implied they go in the LOF.

    Thanks!

    Hi Ken,

You likely have two things going on...

    1. The TOC entry breaks in a wonky location
      • For this one, you can use CTRL+Space to add nonbreaking spaces to the last few words in the entry to get more paletable breaks without Shift+Returns in your titles (assumes you don't want to break entries in your content pages)
      • See Managing Line Breaks in the Table of Contents in chapter 18 of FrameMaker - Working with Content, 2020 release
    2. You'll want to set up additional tab stops and tabs in your LOF tag (perhaps Heading1LOF or similar) to push your dot leader out on the second line.

I'll write this up and get back to you later today...

    -Matt

Of course, you might also shorten your section heading 😉

    Hi @Kenneth5FBC:

I'm struggling to visualize this question. If Lin's reply did not answer for you, please share a screen shot.

You need to set a Left indent to align with the first line's margins.

Are you using the soft return in the generated LOF or in your figure caption? Either way, you're usually better off using non-breaking spaces in the actual Figure Caption text to keep words together.

There are non-breaking spaces in ALL captions.

Just to clarify Lin's suggetion...the non-breaking spaces can be used sparingly in the content near where an unfortunate line break occurs in the TOC.
