Losing Word italics when exporting FrameMaker 11 file

When I import a Word file into Frame - the italics and bold characters are maintained. But if I save the file as HTML or XML - they disappear. If I retag them with the character tags they are maintained, but working in a science document the italics are everywhere. Is it possible to search for the original italics and replace with character tag?

I am using FrameMaker 11.

    Are the character attributes applied as tags in Word or are they just overrides? Check the FM file to see if the italic and bold items have character tags applied. If not, use the Find/Change to quickly tag the items.

    1. First create the appropriate Character tags .

    2. Apply the tag to one instance.

    3. Use the Copy > Special to pick up the character tag to the clipboard.

    4. Use the Find > Character Format to look for the formatting attribute that you want to tag (Shift+F8 sets everything to AsIs so that you can selectt only the properties hat you need to look for, i.e. italic or bold).

    5. Use By Pasting... option in the Change to apply thee character tag to all found instances.

    Thanks - this works great.

    I knew it was somewhere in search and replace but I couldn't come up with the right combination!

    Perhaps and for once, you could start at the Word end – using a character style in Word (and, of course, training your colleagues to do the same!) might speed future conversions :-}
