Lost the use of arrows in FM

I'm using Framemaker 7.0 and a few weeks back, I lost the use of the up/down/left/right arrows.

I tried to look on the Internet and on FAQ, but haven't found any answer to that problem so far (unlike the one time I lost the use of the miuse wheel...) 🙂

It's very annoying, especially when you want to keep a horizontal or vertical height when moving an item (graphic) in regards to another one.

Thank you

This sounds similar to a recurring problem some FM users have with CTRL keys "going dead".  This is usually reported as being unable to use CTRL+c, CTRL+x, and CTRL+v to copy/cut and paste text.

The exact cause of that problem is unclear, but when it happens to me the circumventions I use to recover CTRL key functionality, in order of inconvenience are:

    • Quit and restart FrameMaker (least inconvenient, least reliable)
    • Log out of Windows then log back in (moderately inconvenient, typically reliable)
    • Reboot Windows (most inconvenient, totally reliable))

For what it's worth, when I have problems with keys "going dead" in FrameMaker, it usually seems to be a result of double-clicking an imported-by-reference graphic to edit that graphic in a separate program (in my case PaintSho Pro)...

    Cheers & hope this helps,

More details might trigger a remembrance of the issue from one of the forum readers -- What specific version of FM 7.0 are you using (from Help > About, the "pxxx" numbers)?  Are you using Windows XP or ... ?

just to be absoloutely clear, do the arrow keys work as expected in other apps, but not in FM? Could you give us an exact action that you would normally be using the keys for, e.g. are you selecting a graphic, using the Alt key when dragging, etc etc?

    Hello,

Thanks for your replies. I have tried rebooting, restarting, re-everything...

In fact, there's only one specific situation in which the arrow keys go dead : when selecting a graphic in a block and trying to move it with the arrow keys.

Beside that, these keys work perfectly well in any other application AND in FM when using them in text paragraphs.

I use FM 7.0 p492 with Windows XP profession version 2002 Service pack 2.

    Thank you again.

Are you also holding down the Alt-key when trying to move the graphics?
