Question

Make Paragraph Formats go away

I'm running FM12 on Windows 7, and when I do Ctrl-9 to search for a Paratag to use, I get a seach box and a list of formats. In the previous version (FM9) I could see the possible formats with the letters I'm typing in the status bar at the bottom, select it, and all was well. In FM12, if I press Ctrl-9 and immediately start typing the first letters of the format I want, the search box takes a while to appear and when it does, it is stuck. I can't type anything in it and I can't make it go away. It's stuck not in FM but in Windows. I have to move FM out from under it to see what I'm doing. AND I can't put the focus back in the document. I have to restart FM12. What's a fellow to do? The search box is presently over this window as I write.

Hi Steve,

The very first time you initiate one of the smart catalog dialogues, like the Paragraph or Character formats, FM may take a little bit of extra time to enumerate all of the catalog entries. Thereafter, the next time you summon it, it should pop-up almost instantaneously. So, immediately diving in before it's finished  enumerating *may* be triggering a quirk, but up until now, I haven't seen this.

I've tried to trigger this behaviour by typing ahead before it's finished enumerating, but it doesn't ball up on either a WinXP or a Win7 64-bit system.

Have you tried a screen refresh (ctrl+L) or <esc> in FM?

Also, are you saying that the non-functioning Catalog Search window closes when you close FM or is it still hanging around after you close FM?

Hi Arnis,

You are right that if I wait, it works fine. I have noticed that the second time I use this, it comes up faster. However, it seems like this behavior is a bug, particularly since I can't get back in the document I'm working on.

Haven't tried ctrl-L or <esc> but I will and report.

When I close FM and restart it, the problem Catalog Search window is not there.

Since the Smart Catalog feature is a new implementation in FM12, it might have some glitches that are dependent upon the processor (speed) and graphics card that weren't encounterd during the pre-release program.

If you know that you have a lot of tags in your catalogs, then it may be prudent to wait the first time to let it properly enumerate everything.

If you encounter anymore "phunnies" with the Smart Catalogs, please do report them here. For example, I can get FM12 to repeatedly either crash or hang, if I have a Smart Catalog window open and I decide to close the application by clicking on the application close button (the red "X" box) in the upper right corner of the FM app window.
