Missing TOC Items

I'm using Frame 9 and updating an existing TOC, I've checked that I have the 5 styles that I want included in the TOC. But when I update it, the very first header style is not included and everything after that is renumber/lettered.

There I'm including a Chapter No. and Chapter Heading and the top three level heads. They are setup using styles, and all three all use autonumbering and lettering.

Any ideas on what could cause this?

    Usually this is because the problem heading is in a different text flow than the other headings.  Also, triple-check for spelling variations (stray spaces before/after the tag name) that might be causing difficulty.

    And finally, check your exact version of FM from Help > About, being sure it's 9.0.3 or 9.0.4 (aka p250 or higher).

    Hi Sheila,

    Thanks for responding so quickly. The text is in the same text flow as is the entire chapter. I checked that the style wasn't altered for that instance. I also tried making the style not bold and it changed for every instance in the chapter. Of course changed it back.

    I am using just 9.0.

    When I copied the file and created a new book I did manage to get all the missing styles, but the TOC didn't have any of the autonumbering or lettering.

    Needless to say, I'm not an expert on Frame, but am trying to learn.

    The Help > About screen shows the specific version in the middle of the screen,  just below the orange top half, it should display "Version 9.0pxxx" where the xxx would be "250" or "255" -- if you aren't using either of those versions then you should definitely update before moving forward. You can update through the Help > Updates menu within FM, or by downloading the files from:

    Updates - Adobe - FrameMaker : For Windows

    All updates have to be applied sequentially, in order; I usually reboot between updates, but that's probably just paranoia.

    About paratags, assuming for example that you were wanting a paratag called "HeadingNew" in your TOC, it wouldn't matter if the formatting of HeadingNew was bold in one chapter and italic in another, all that matters is the actual name of the tag is exactly the same including capitalization.

    Creating a new book was a good idea, as that sometimes cleans out "gremlins". It is possible to import the formatting of the previous TOC into the new TOC if you have named the files differently, or perhaps if you have a backup copy of the old TOC -- you'd need to import the paragraph tags and the reference pages into the new TOC.

    With your original file, one possibility might have been that you hadn't saved and/or updated the book file after adding the problem chapter -- in that case even though the chapter would show up in the list of chapters in the book window, you need to save the book file and then update the book in order to regenerate the index and have it pick up the paratags from the chapters.
