Need formatting for a run-in heading to end in a period

I am working on FrameMaker 11.  How do I format my run-in heading to end in a period but not have the period show up when I use that heading in a cross-reference? Or can that even be done?

In the Paragraph designer, you need to specify the priod as the default punctuation. Then when you pick-up the run-in heading using thee <$paratext> building block, the period isn't part of the content.
