Need to "Save as" PDF using Framemaker 7 with Windows 7

Hi...

New to this forum. In a previous life I used Framemaker a great deal for my job with Cisco. As a result, I have dozens and dozens of Framemaker files that I can still open, edit, and resave. I have Framemaker 7 on my Windows 7 laptop but I cannot create (Save as) PDF from my Framemaker (.fm) files; am told a print file is not available. Does anyone have suggestions to help me solve this problem? Am open to subscribing to some version of Adobe Acrobat to get this done, but am not sure if the current AA version will open my older Framemaker (.fm) files.
Thank you in advance... Michael

Does FM7 even run native on Win7?

I have a machine on which FM7.0p578 still runs, and it offers Save-as-PDF, Print-to-PDF, and Print-to-Ps & Distill. This all ran fine, and the now-offline machine is Win7/64-Pro.
However…
FM & Distiller are running in XPMode, which is a Windows XP/32 VM that Microsoft used to offer for Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise (not Basic, Home or not-so-Premium).

I had an extensive write-up of how to do this, but it seems to have been enhanced into the bit bucket during some forum upgrade. I still have an off-line copy of it, and could re-post it, but it may now be too late to obtain everything needed to get it working (apart from the risks of connecting Win7 to the internet).

Clarifying...you have FrameMaker 7 running on a Windows 7 laptop. You can open .fm files in FrameMaker 7, but are unable to create a PDF from them?

I don't think a subscription to Acrobat DC will do anything to help. I do think a subscription to the current version of FrameMaker will. But assuming that isn't an option, take a look at this post. It was written for a slightly newer version of Fm (9/10) but Fm 7 worked the same way, IIRC. Run through the various listed options—one of them may work.

I'll follow this link and do as it suggests. Trying to keep this as simple as I can, but if wishes were fishes... thank you...m.

No Acrobat will not open FM files. Is the intention just to create PDFs from these old FM7 files?

Have you tried printing to a PDF printer instance in Windows? If that's not an option, then perhaps saving as .ps files from within FM7 might work, and then distilling them using Acrobat.

Or you could go all in, download FM2020, open up a copy of the FM7 files and then fix them up (because you're pre-Unicode there& I highly doubt the fonts would come through correctly) & then create PDFs.
