New job options in FrameMaker 2020

I do not want to misuse another thread.

Matt wrote about new job options in FM 2020:

My questions are:

Do you know why there are json and joboptions file name extensions?

And do you have a description of these new job options (at least more than the very short sentence in Distiller)? In particular:

Cleaner_Defaults.joboptions
LiquidModePDF.joboptions
Mobile.joboptions
PDF20.joboptions

What is the difference?

 

Additionally:

When I copied some new joboptions files into

c:\Users\myusername\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings\

all were accessible in FrameMaker in the Publish pod.

But in Distiller I can access only these two:

Cleaner_Defaults.joboptions
Mobile.joboptions

These two do not appear in Distiller:

LiquidModePDF.joboptions
PDF20.joboptions

    Matt brought PDFA2b to my attention on another thread.

    Matt S - Tech Comm Tools: … can't produce PDF/A-2b in Fm 2020?
    In FM2019, but I have FM2020 on the machine, and can see those new .joboptions.

    but cannot view or Edit settings in FM2020  via:
    File » Print Setup » Adobe PDF: [Properties]
    Default Settings: [PDFA2b] [Edit]
    throws a "Could not open the file" error despite
    C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings\PDFA2b.joboptions
    being there, and easily opened in Notepad.

     

    The Publish pod provides no path to an Edit of the JobOptions.


    And, using Distiller and doing a Settings » Add Adobe PDF Settings…
    of that file (from either directory) also throws a [different] error:

    Adobe PostScript software version: 3018.101
    CID support library initialization completed.
    Adobe PDF Settings file read error in PDFA2b.joboptions:
    /CheckCompliance out of range

    This might be less surprising, given Stephan's remarks on this thread.

    It looks like a valid .jo file in Notepad.
    Is my copy just defective?

    Some obscure issue in font cache? (resetting FNTCACHE.DAT & reboot didn't fix)


    If I can get it work, it might eliminate a post-process step. And it does appear to work. Publish does generate a PDF tagged as PDF/A2b, so it can read the JO. But there's no way so far found to view or change any settings within that might not be also exposed to the Publish dialog.

    In addition to my open questions of how we might view/edit these new JobOptions…

    They were supplied with FM2020. Are they expected to work in FM2019?

    Update: based on a test, using the new PDFA2b JobOption:

    • FM2020 generates (via Publish) a book PDF that Acrobat DC recognizes as PDF/A.
    • FM2019 does not. With the PDFA2b j.o configured, it publishes a PDF, but AcroDC does not recognize it as PDF/A. AcroDC can  convert it to PDF/A, but the file size is nearly 50% larger via that 2-step route.

    Hi @Winfried Reng,

     

    these are joboptions used by FrameMaker's new PDF engine. Their names speak for themself: LiquiteModePDF.joboption supports creating "Liquid PDFs" that can reflow on Acrobat mobile on mobile devices and have additional functionality (sometimes also "unofficially" referred to as "responsive PDF").

    PDF20.pdf supports PDF 2.0 (ISO 32000-2:2017).

     

    Liquide Mode PDFs and PDF 2.0 are only supported in Adobe's PDFL Engine, but not in Distiller (as far as I know), this is why you probably cannot see them in Distiller.

    Thank you very much.

    However, I remember that I had tested the liquid mode joboptions a while ago, and I could activate the liquid mode in Acrobat on a mobile devide, no matter whether I had used the liquid mode joboptions or not. Therefore I do not know, why I should use this.

    And what is the difference to the mobile joboptions?

     

    And when should I use the PDF20 joboptions? Which features are supported which are not supported by the other joboptions?
